Seen as mini-me's are now in fashion on this thread, here's me and mine  Living proof that having a child doesn't just make the missus put on weight, it's me 4 stone heavier than, thankfully, i am now

Ever worked with a steady cam system? That is apparently a back killer. Fortunately I'm not a camera man :D

Yeah SteadyCams can absolutely kill on a long shoot, worst paid shoot i ever did was a 9hour stint with a Sony DVCAM system, further complicated by the fact i had to run around with an umbilical too

As to my own personal use of the things, i built one of these http://14dollarstabilizer.org/ some years ago, it's great for small cameras, but as you have to run around with it stretched out in front of you at arms length, and with no straps (though i did try to fit some), it starts to hurt very quickly

Geo Ghost, I'm jealous of you camera

I'm stuck with the old SD Sony PD170P and a 16mm Aaton, do you still use celluloid on your course?...

We keep trying to get our college to invest in a basic steady-cam but it always gets put off :(

JacobD88 wrote:Geo Ghost, I'm jealous of you camera
Well it's not mine. We borrow it from the college for our production shoots. We usually use either that one, the Sony FX1 or sometimes the Panasonic HMC41E. My personal favourite is the Panasonic because it's light, portible, easy to move around and uses SD cards rather than bloomin' tape! :P Though each one has it's up and down sides.
Still, we get some brilliant results from them :D
We only use DV tape and SD card as we edit digitally on Final Cut (or Adobe in my case). We're slowly moving over to filming in HD but it's often more trouble than worth because of format issues and it only gets downgraded when we export anyway.

Good to hear you are still using SD, when i left university i was concerned that everyone seemed to be really pushing HD, and 4 years on, i have yet to move to HD for the same reasons that you listed.

It's a shame you don't get to use celluloid though, if you ever get the chance to work with film (and have the finances) I'd highly recommend having a go, as you can do things with it that look a thousand times better than any digital filter added to a piece of video. There's also something that feels good about waiting for your rushes to develop, then physically cutting & splicing your work on a Steinbeck

Super-8 Film (Don't bother with Standard-8 it was obsolete even 25 years ago) is the cheapest format still available as it was used widely as a film equivalent to the camcorder up until the late 80's so you can pick up film stock and cameras/projectors cheaply at car boots (I recently got a projector, camera, splicer, spare bulbs, and 1000ft of film for £15!) Led Zeppelin 8mm film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTiOxl6ukKE

16mm/Super-16 (like i use in the Aaton) lies around HD in resolution, nice format to work with, 100ft of film will give you 3-5minutes depending on your fps and it's not too expensive to get developed. This Blink182 video was shot on 16mm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1tAYmMjLdY

35mm is stupidly expensive, and of course is the format most cinema releases are recorded in.
