Realistic station construction

Post by Hyronymus »

Sofar, all serious suggestions to improve TTD have one thing in common: make the game more realistic. I'm totally in favour of this approach and I thought I could add something.

Dear patchgod (and your patcharchangels),
Would it be possible to alter the unrealistic approach of building stations in TTD? Right now, heaven-assembled stations crash down on the green earths core, ready-to-use instantly. It would be more realistic to have the station take time to construct, just like all the city buildings and industries. This implies that you (as a player) have to wait a while before you can use the station for yor planned service, which makes it more realistic to me. I'm curious about the possibility since so many graphics have changed already (though not implemented yet, which I understand).

in that case i would like to see an option to build the perrons one by one (in know this is possible, but you still get a rectangled station), and not the problem that all the perrons have to be the same length, or have to lay down in the same direction

or have to lay down in the same direction
A station USUALLY have all the perrons in one direction!!

Two more ideas :

a) You only may have platforms all the same size. What about having a station where two platforms will be long 7 and other 3 platforms long 2 ? Might help a lot. Especially with simple creating 7x7 stations ;)

b) You may click-and-drag the 2/4 type track. What about allowing click-and-drag even for 1/3 type tracks ? (type = just press 1/2/3/4 ingame while railroad construction window opened) Might improve buildtime a lot.

In America, we used to have Union Stations - where several railroads would build into and run passengers out of. The same is true (of course) for airports, where airplanes all land at one airport.

If you want to make this game realistic, you could have cities produce these pieces (stations and airports) and let any player link in. Of course, to purchase a track or a gate would cost, but then you would be in competition for all the passengers.

All this is very nice ideas. But, this all is hard coded in the game engine. And, the most important, all in assembly language, the hardest one of all. Josef already did remarkable job to change a lot. But you are dreaming. This is a call for brand new game. Maybe if we bombard Chris (and not this forum) with this stuff and new ideas he will come with new version, but without the source code for the original TTD is almost imposible to do those changes.
Just my 2 cents.

You should be able to build stations underground, like "tunnel-stations" and if you build a station on top it will be linked to the underground. You could make a "sub-way" view (like the underground view in RCT) and build like that. I agree with the "gradual building" that would be more realistic.

Of all the ideas here I think only the gradual building might be possible.

That bigger station idea is great, specially when playing as a "Truck Delivery" company. As i'm doing by now.

I have about 20 truck at only one coal mine cause it produces 270 tonnes of coal/month.
What would happen when it rises to 540 or higher. :(
Here's some pics of that station that i'm currently taking care of, it's no-good station, because other station gets more coal than other, and each station got 10 trucks.

But you are dreaming.

Am I? I thought of it as adding new graphics in a file and then use the same routine used for buidling industry / town buildings to gradually construct the station, reading from the added graphics file. BTW, so many things that are hardcoded in the game engine have been tackled by Mighty Josef. Who knows...

You COULD use my 45 tonnes trucks!! (43 tonnes for coal, actually)

Have you read the topic about the tunnel being some sort of secret gateway to another dimension... ? I dont think we will ever be able to build stations in it...

i like the idea with gradual building, but thats probably far off in the future - i believe the master of patches ( patchman  ) is working on getting the new trains into the game - much better than a silly old station.

(Don't) Correct me if i am wrong, but i believe trains are the best for of transport in the game (most of the time)

I think Josef is having a long deserved break
Actually Michael is adding the new trains, because now you can add your own vehicles
Josef programmed everything Michael needed to be able to do this
check the patch progress topic :D
