openttd installation in Linux Ubuntu

Post by yccheok »

i am using ubuntu linux 5.04 hoary

does anyone noe where i can use synaptic package manager to get a openttd - the open source transport tycoon deluxe?

i try to get the debian file from the openttd homepage, however, i get the following error while trying to perform the installation:

yccheok@ubuntu:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i openttd_0.4.0.1-2_i386.deb
Selecting previously deselected package openttd.
(Reading database ... 67543 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking openttd (from openttd_0.4.0.1-2_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of openttd:
openttd depends on libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-21); however:
Version of libc6 on system is 2.3.2.ds1-20ubuntu13.
dpkg: error processing openttd (--install):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
openttd

any suggestion?

thanks

Hey,

I've seen this problem before. The working "solution" is to just force the install by giving --force-depends (IIRC) to dpkg.
The cause for this is that the package is made for debian/unstable, not for ubuntu. I'm thinking of a solution for this, but I'm not sure how...

I expect this problem occurs more often with other debian packages trying to install on ubuntu, if they don't have the newest libc version?

I've Linux Ubuntu too, but didn't have this problem. I didn't download the Debian though, I downloaded openttd-0.4.0.1-linux.i386.tar.gz and that worked great :)

and if it is not to scarry all you have to do to compile the sources is to unpack the source package, cd to the directory and type "make<enter>". It should not take that much time if you're not at a very slow machine with 640kb RAM. On my mchine it takes 5 minutes or so. (to compare, open office takes 12 hours)

Then as with binarys you had to apply the TTD files.

The issue is that Sarge broke compatibility with Hoary just before the release, and thus most sarge packages will not install on Hoary.
