Just for the record. Here´s an old discussion from misc.transport.rail.europe on "Street running in Europe" which mentions many locations where passenger trains are using streets. Apparently, usage of streets by freight trains seems to be even more common:

Here's a few thoughts.

1. Patchman said it would need a new track type in order to have the tracks appear as if they were in the street, because it cannot know if it replaced a road or not. However, you might be able to approximate the same thing by using the same zones that the cities use to determine whether or not a street gets sidewalks, lampposts, etc. Make the tracks look to see what zone they are in, and take on sidewalks as well.

2. Regardless of Patching, or even OTTD, I cannot think that we'll ever have normal tracks and RVs sharing a square, because the normal tracks run down the middle of the square against opposing RV traffic, and the routing algorithm would be a nightmare. The proposed tram system would have two tracks on each square, just as the roads have two lanes on each square, and so the trams would move just as if they were normal traffic, so that's not a problem. But that won't happen in the Patch for a while yet. I suppose at that point, then proper trams wouldn't be able to connect to normal tracks, unless something very interesting is invented to adapt them.

Thats not what he said. He said it would require a newtrack feature. Think newindustries, newstations, newgrf. What do they all do? Add .grf capabilities.

We are already using a third track type to make them look like they are in the street. Please pay attention.

I can't believe they let huge frieght trains so close to people and vechiles over there. Here in australia, you can recieve a hefty fine for just being close to the railway (dangerous being railfan).I like the idea :D for the game as well :)

For me the trams would be only interesting, if I could build the tracks over the already existing roads, without having to remove them - and solve the city's public transport with trams instead of busses.. I don't use busses anyway, so they could be replaced by trams.
As for letting freight trains etc. into cities: despite the examples you mentioned , I don't think it's a realistic option.

Well, I'd like the option to be there for those of us that want to use it. You don't need to use them if you don't want to, but I see the use of it, esp. to get a freight line to the factory across town.

Wouldn't it mess up the city though, because the houses would no longer be next to a road?

Yes, I was also wondering about that. And what with Local Authorities, as I remember they doesn't like too many railway tracks near/in town. They also doesn't like demolishing roads too much.
