Let me introduce you to a little file called readme.txt. Specifically section 4.0.
Edited so it sounds nicer.
If you can't be bothered to read all that you need the original data files from a version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe. If you haven't got them you are stuck - unless you download them illegally from one of the sites noted here.4.0) Running OpenTTD:
---- ----------------
Before you run OpenTTD, you need to put the game's datafiles into the data/
subdirectory. You need the following files from the original version
of TTD as OpenTTD makes use of the original TTD artwork.
List of the required files:
sample.cat
trg1r.grf
trgcr.grf
trghr.grf
trgir.grf
trgtr.grf
(Alternatively you can use the TTD GRF files from the DOS version: TRG1.GRF,
TRGC.GRF, TRGH.GRF, TRGI.GRF, TRGT.GRF. A few minor graphical glitches with
the DOS graphics remain. E.g. the autorail button in the rail toolbar doesn't
look as nice as with the Windows graphics.)
If you want music you need to copy the gm/ folder from Windows TTD into your
OpenTTD folder, not your data folder.
You can change the data path (which contains savegames as well) in Makefile.config
by setting DATA_DIR_PREFIX and USE_HOMEDIR.

So...
Please be polite once in your life!
I am no fool that cannot read these files. And if you want to know, I've read all of it.
I just thought that a freeware had free data files. It is made for people who had the old (commercial) program, isn't it?
Well, so, forget it.
Au revoir...

Re: So...
Please excuse lucaspiller's reply but there have been so many questions about this that at times it is getting irritated.sanmartin wrote:Please be polite once in your life!

OpenTTD is a free program very heavily based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Therefore for it to function it needs the data files of TTDLX as you said yourself in your reply. We hope to become independent soon of these files so OpenTTD can function on its own, without any such inconveniences.
I hope one harsh reply hasn't totally spoiled your OpenTTD experience

Also a good idea is to say you have read the readme in advance to protect yourself against flames

P.S.
1. If you use the installer it should ask you about the data files.
2. Don't forget to rename the files to lower-case or they won't be "found"

Well, I'm here.
I truly hope that you have soon these files made by yourselves.
I would just sugest to say more enfatically (in the Readme or in the site) that these files are not free...
Au Revoir.

Appologies to anyone I scared off / caused long term distress to / killed their cat but it does say in the manual that you need these files from the original game and has been asked many times before. Also I was in a bit of a bad mood at that time (I always am in the mornings
) so my post could have been a bit less sarcastic.
I am glad you did come back and didn't turn your back on us, and hopefully you have the game working perfectly now. If you have any other queries don't be afraid to ask, but please, please, please do a bit of research before hand.
If you are interested in the new graphics that are under development have a look at the OpenTTD Graphics forum and the OpenTTD Graphics Development wiki page. Very little (if any) programming experience is needed, all you need is a bit of artistic tallent and time.
