NEW DEFAULT TRAINSET

Post by Colonel32 »

Because it wouldn't be fair to set some national set as defaut trainset, it would be best to create a mixed trainset, containing vehices from different manufacturers and countries. Most wellcome are engines, that were used in many different states, that were widely exported, and which are well known (at least in some part of the world)

Your suggestions for which vehicles to include are - post here:

not to sound cheeky, but honestly i don't care what trains are what.

as long as we have a range of "quality" trains then its fine by me.

i think that trains should be distributed by their stats . IMO no point in adding a crappy train after a better one is available unless it has a real economic difference.

planes in TTD were stupid, as you had awsome ones pretty early, and once either the concord, or the 300 seater were available there is no point in any of the others. so to me they were all pointless.

regional differences :S to me thats not important, but i can see how to others it might be.

i agree get the best from each and put them together. (best looking, best performing...)

p.s. even the names IMO can be different to what they are modeled on. doesn't bother me :P

Why not we just pick the trains from the graphics without *.nfo files thread?

Most of the artists allow their graphics to be used as long as they are credited

maybe we could run a "Design the engines for openTTD" competition/thread, get a bunch of people together and discuss what "classes" of vehicles need to be added and work together on a definitive list of what will work and what looks good and what is nationally diverse

Why is it necessary at all to have a new default trainset? I personally like the trains that come with TTD very much, they are a nice selection.

Only the graphics are protected by copyright though. We only need to redraw the graphics of each train (preferably at a higher resolution anyway). Same for buildings. Only the graphics of e.g. a coal mine are protected. If someone redraws a coal mine, it is perfectly fine.

Why not tweak some of the more useless vehicles in the game and make it more interesting while we're at it. Not to mention restoring everything to their real names.

We could also make the future stuff more interesting.....maglev for example just has 4 units, one better than the last......no specialities.

you're not allowed to change to the real names because those names are generally trademarks. Another IP (intellectual property) barrier.... I look forward to the day IP as it stands today has gone the way of the dino.

Nah, I'm programmer in Delphi and I won't be happy if someone decompiles my .exe, changes some texts with info about me to info about him, and there won't be anything to stop him.

Now imagine you making trainset. So here comes some cheater and posts:

Image
Look! I've made a train! Do you like it?

So, how do you feel, when you can't prove it's yours, nothing stops him, there is no intellectual property...

P.S. the train is made by Sanchimaru https://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php? ... c&start=40 I took it just for example

Let's get back on topic. The reason for making a new dafault trainset is the graphics copyright issue - some of us want openTTD totaly independent from TTdeluxe.

And basicaly, we could create totally fictionous vehicles, to make better engines come later all the time. But I'd prefer using existing engines.

I agree with the independence from TTD, but calling it copyright... You haven't re-done whole coding part, did you?

I know, you've misunderstood me:

TT graphics are copyrighted, so we are all making new graphics
TT code is copyrighted, too. But OTTD doesn't have 100% new code, does it?

That is debatable. But why don't you sue the OTTD devs, just to make a point? Then they'll sue you back for wasting their time and bandwidth with your spam and everyone will be happy. Yay.

BTW, your point is?

Hes point is it will never be fully legal.

However, true as it may be, it can still be closer to legal.
