I agree with having ship lines, despite the obvious complications it will bring into coding. This is obviously because ships should not be a braindead vehicle. You should need more than two stations, a ship and some buoys to make a shipping route profitable.

Wouldn't it be better to lay out shipping routes with a null width? As in, they're simply lines that the ship tends to travel along, rather than a strict route like a road or rail. That way ships can deviate from the course if they want to avoid a bigger vessel or for whatever reason... in real life shipping lanes are usually several miles wide. You only get detailed strict paths when you're entering a harbour or an area with a lot of shallow water and dredged shipping channels.
