Newbie looking for easy set of NewGRFs

Post by kiwi »

Hi all,

I've recently become interested in Transport Tycoon again, about 15 years on from playing the original! It's been interesting going through this forum looking at all of the developments and modifications now available. Without making the game too complicated or difficult for a beginner, can anyone recommend a good set of NewGRFs for:

- Trains
- Road vehicles
- Planes
- Boats
- New town buildings
- New industries
- Anything else that improves the gaming experience, without adding too much extra difficulty/micromanagement to the game from the original transport tycoon

Thanks in advance for any suggestions :-)

If you don't want complexity you should stay away from ECS, FIRS, 2cc set, CanSet and a few other like that IMO. Try looking at BaNaNaS and the #openttdcoop newgrf package ((in-)direct link should be in my signature) for newgrfs that you might like. Personally I would recommend some of Pikka's newgrfs to start with: UKRS, PBI, AV8 etc. Those newgrfs can mainly be considered graphics and statistical upgrades although they are the originals of all groundbreaking technical enhancements, it is just quite subtle IMO :)

PBI? That's VERY difficult to play with and definitely not something for beginners :? For industries, I would just stick with the default because there is no good simple industry set that adds to the default industries but keeps their behaviour.
For vehicles, I do recommend the 2cc set, but with costs turned down via parameter. Then they're very cheap to buy and run, there's MASSIVE variety and you can increase the costs in your next game once you get the hang of it :)

Oh, and BTW, welcome to the forums and to OpenTTD.

Personally I find PBI to be an excellent addition to the basic industries found in vanilla (O)TT(P). Some of the stockpiling options can be a bit confusing, but it makes more sense IMHO that a Steel Mill needs Iron AND Coal to produce Steel. I think for someone used to the basic industries who wants an enhanced game, PBI is an excellent choice.

After PBI, i'd say FIRS, but that gets a bit complex at times. There are so many industries it can be hard to find two compatible ones close enough to be profitable early on.

Then there is ECS, but even I haven't got my head around that beast yet! I am sure it is very rewarding if you can handle it, it just confuses the buggery out of me.

Well, I said after PBI, as in, after you've adjusted :)

Thanks for your replies everyone :-) I'm going to try PBI, 2cc and AV8. Any recommendations for town replacements sets? I can see a lot of different buildings in OpenGFX vs. the original Transport Tycoon, but the Total Town Replacement set looks nice: http://grfcrawler.tt-forums.net/details ... ils&id=130. It sounds like nothing major is changed with the actual gameplay with this set.

Get the updated version of the Total Town Replacement Set (ttrs) from the #openttdcoop Development Zone Downloads site. If I may suggest that you combine it with the Swedish Houses set for a very nice look. Run a few test games that you have no intention of actually playing to view the result. Also be aware that those NewGrfs placed lower on the NewGrf list will take precedence over those higher up on the list. As an example if the Total Town Replacement Set is lower on the list than the Swedish Houses set then when you generate a map the Total Town Replacement Set's buildings will be more abundant than those of the Swedish Houses set. This can be important if a particular town set has buildings in it that last throughout the entire game without being replaced. The dominance of one town set over another due to list placement tends to wax and wane over time during a game with the exception of these permanent buildings. As for changes to game mechanics with town replacement sets most (but not all) tend to have higher generation and acceptance rates for things like passengers, mail, and goods.
