500 Vehicle limit.

I am currently playing OpenTTD and I like to use (a lot) of vehicles and was wondering if any body knows why or has a solution to overcome the 500 vehicle limit. This sure is buggin' me now.

Before you say, yes I searched, but could not find what I wanted.

Advanced settings -> Vehicles might have something that pleases you a bit.

Personally I think the 500-limit is a good instrument to motivate players/AIs to use more than one transport mode.

I once hit the 500 RV limit on a single route. Well, the route was from one end to the other on a 1024x1024 map and another player was overfeeding the factory so I had a lot of goods to transport to "his" city.

Then you should just play the original game. I hit the limits constantly there, while the default limits of Transport Tycoon Deluxe is good enough for me. I can easily increase them anyway if i need to.

The original limit was 690 "total vehicles" (train wagons counting as one vehicle each), 80 trains, 80 road vehicles, 50 ships and 40 planes.

The fun part with the original limit is that when you bought a twocar engine, if you were close enough to the limit you would only get one car. The extra car doesn't give any extra horsepower in the original game I think, and it was useful to fit another wagon. Trains could only be five tiles long as well.

The only reason the limits are still in openTTD is for multiplayer, mostly to make sure that the poor server/clients doesn't lag to death when too many vehicles are running at once.

What setting do I change? I haven't found anything in advanced settings that looks to change the limit.

It's actually under the 'Limitations' section, even with just 'Basic' settings viewable:

Ive got to 5000 vehicles in multiplayer mode with 3 players, and you need a very fast PC for the server once you get around this number.
This was on a large map though 16000 X 1000, so a smaller map may be better.

really?! I customarily exhaust the 5,000 maximum and mostly for shuttle feeders
