Get a compass and just dig upwards. Then you should be able to find your base from your spawn point.

that's the point, don't want to dig up more, there's a lot of exits already though finding them is terrible from downside ....

also found awesome straight down natural cave - it goes nearly perfectly down from the surface (and have lava flowing in it, looks amazing)

Awesome video :)

But...AFAIK in the movies predators did not see in visible light spectrum, right?

You should leave markers in your tunnels as you explore them to help you navigate. I put 3 dirt blocks on the wall and put a torch on the end that points to the exit. You'll never be lost again.

I guess this sends hardware requirements through the roof :| And it doesn't look that good, the textures could use extra resolution.

I tried 128x128 texture pack once and I got very laggy experience. I know, my laptop isn't exactly Alienware, but it isn't particularly weak either (GF 9650M GT 1GB, C2D 2.5 GHz, 4 GB RAM).

I've been running a 64x64 texture, running just fine. (Though, I do quite have an alienware (or better) computer). I am now even ticking at 16GB Ram, no more swapping ftw :-]

I even fixed the occasional random crashing (had to install x64 java)

I think I prefer the Minecraft graphics as they are.
Very very simple... but it seems to just work and is still enjoyable :)

I am using Quandary Reborn pack which is very nice pack for standard size, so no need to patch it ...

The improved lighting looks great, it makes it look much more like a toy world (which is a good thing in context of Minecraft).

But I dislike the current mod application procedure enough not to bother to try it. It is not only that the jar has to be patched, but the whole thing has to be repeated every time update is released :(

If you just want to change the apperance then there is proper theme support now which doesn't require changing the .jar file(s).

Adding extensibility to existing application is extremely difficult task, really extensible application must be written like that from scratch. I doubt he will be able to create a modding framework that would allow modification of anything like it is now. I guess adding new blocks (with existing features), new mobs, new biomes etc. should be easy, but the renderer stuff and such? I doubt it will be possible without patching (it is pretty much the same problem OTTD has).

Civilization IV had this handled nicely - Firaxis released all gameplay-related source codes (effectively everything but game loader, XML engine, graphics engine and UI framework) and some truly awesome total conversion emerged. This approach is limited by the fact that only one mod can be loaded at time though.

If you want any other texture resolution than the default 16x16, you have to patch the JAR.
