Overpowered Aircraft?

Post by Eruresto »

Is it just me or are aircraft OP? Compared to other vehicles of a similar cost, they bring in far more profit. I have found that because of this the AI then simply churn out aircraft as quickly as they can. I've tried changing the aircraft speed to 1/4 but it still doesn't balance it.

Aircraft do not make significantly more profit than other transport types (particularly if you're using a balanced set like av8, plug plug). The only reason they become money printers is the town growth in OTTD; trains would become money printers too except it's harder to increase capacity on rail routes than air routes. If you use a town building grf which restricts town growth and keeps the passenger numbers sensible, spamming large aircraft is no longer profitable and aircraft become much more balanced.

It's not about OpenTTD being balanced or not. OpenTTD uses exatly the same data as ancient TTD, which was on its own balanced, but some new features broke this balance - in this case large maps. If you let a plane run across a 2048x2048 map, it will bring in a zillion money every run simply beause the default planes were balanced for little 256x256 maps.

As Pikka mentioned, GRFs will mostly fix this.

Thanks for this. I thought something was a bit odd: I came from TTO straight to OTTD and got very confused! Regarding the GRFs, would you suggest getting as many as possible from one author? Presumably different authors have different ideas about running costs and suchlike for different things, so I thought this might help?

Thanks!

Costs are usually similar but extreme mixing may result in weird costs (interfering of cost multipliers).

Eruresto, Pikka here has made two train sets (URKS/PJ1K, NARS), a plane set (Av8) plus a houses set (TaI), so there you have a nice combination already. See his signature for more info regarding the sets.

That really depends on what strategy the AI employ. Which AI(s) do you use? If you use an air-only AI such as WrightAI then of course it will only build airports/aircrafts.

Ah, thanks for that. I use the UKRS at the moment, but will look into those others!

I normally use NoCAB and AdmiralAI.
