Disasters

Post by krtaylor »

We were talking about improvements to the Disasters in TTD, and came to the conclusion it can't really be done - but some of the ideas were thought cool and worth mentioning here to include in the new game.

So here they are, maybe others have ideas also.

Landslide - some mountain falls down, and buries your rail line, you have to figure out a new way through it. Particularly bad if it's a heavy multi-track route.

Chemical accident / terrorists - half a city goes away, affecting its supply and demand

Environmentalists protest at oil refinery - it can't accept oil for a while

Train robbery - of passenger or goods trains

Coupler malfunction - the last few cars of the train fall off and stay there, or roll downhill, until you send the train back to retrieve them. Could be very awkward

Hurricane - blows a train or truck off a bridge it's crossing. Even better if it blows down all the trees also, and some buildings

Tornado - well, we can all imagine that one.

Yes, the subs torpedoing ships would be great. Particularly bad if it's a passenger ship. If it's an oil tanker, there can be an oil slick

Random bridge collapses, or tunnels, maybe catching a vehicle

Ooh, broader idea of that disaster: Nations going to war, chance of bombing/torpedoing random thing you own, destroying it, and if you're primarily servicing a nation at war, if you have less stations in the opposing country, they stop doing business with you.

Heheh, that's IF the AI will be as bad as it is in TT(D).

Really good example from last week, I was playing a game with the Toyland tileset (dunno why), and the only AI company at the time was trying to connect two basic stations using the point-to-point method. Even with my help it took the AI at least 5 mins to work it out, building simultaneously from both ends, building and demolishing a lot of steel cantilever bridges, before settling on no bridge. Main problem, after all that: It was 1930. No locomotives then. It had the sugar wagons all ready to go, too. Heh.

The only one I think we should forget is the coupler malfunction. That seems like it'd just be annoying and not really contribute to the experience. The bridge/tunnel collapse should happen very rarely, that seems a little rough on the user.

The war idea seems like a good idea, not just for diasasters, but for production as well. For example, during war times we could have production of tanks and weapons that would be sold to the gov't.

Unfortunaly, the gov't doesn't pay the same rates as the industry so we should take that into consideration too then. But what about a large accountant scandal in your company, decreasing all ratings? Or an inquiry that reveals poor safety regulations? That brings me to somethin else, but you have to read that in the Suggestions topic.

Accounting scandals would be a good idea, but there should be a way to avoid them, like having more accountants or different companies to check the accounting.

Another way to counter the accountant thingy, slightly Sim City-like is to have sliders or something to allocate a percentage (or set value) of money per month to keep up the safety regulations, how much you're paying your lawyers monthly, how much luxury you have for passenger compartments (better ratings, more cash per person but maybe 1-3 less people per month), cargo handling regulations... (Do I really need to explain this? Go to your nearest international airport and watch them load your luggage onto the plane.. hope that wasn't your crystal set. )

Jus spotted the train robbery idea. Rather than have this affecting passengers and goods, why not have it affecting only more expensive good such as valuables, diamonds and gold.

Well, the gold, valuables, and diamonds don't work very profitably anyway, unless you made them pay much better to transport than in TTD. If you added the potential for robbery, they'd get avoided altogether.

or you could make it so that robberys make your rating go down in some stations and people dont trust your company as much. also the place that you got the diamonds or whatever from get angry at you for loosing their diamonds and make you pay them or somthing like that
