Idea for Future JetTurbine Trains

Post by NekoMaster »

Just earlier I came up with an idea for a series of jetturbine trains that might be fast and powerfull

First of all it would use a Jet Turbine Like anyother jet Train (well, really, theres only 3 turbine trains I konw of, Big Blow, UAC Turbine Train and the Bomadier JetTrain) anyways, it would also have a after burner option to help the train up step hills, or full pulling heavy loads up hill, it could also be used to gain speed quickly when taking off from the station.

THough I know it porbably sounds dumb It would be nice to have some more Turbine train in openttd :)

Turbine-powered wheeled vehicles generally aren't jet propelled. They take all their power from the turbine with as little energy as possible making it to the exhaust, so an afterburner doesn't really make sense. :)

But this is a game and it make sense...
Why not a jet engine which makes a big flame when accelerating? Something like happens with diesel trains where the smoke come out when accelerating :P

Accelerate ... and torch any passengers that failed to clear the platform before the train departs :)

I am not sure whether it is a good idea ....
If you need something, do it yourself or it will be never done.

I guess if you left the station under normal power then kicked in the v-techs (yo!) you'd be able to really reduce journey times. Remember, this is Russia we're talking about, which is a huge country and mostly empty so travelling at those speeds would be both feasible and provide real benefits.

Although a new disaster of "train takes off" would be rather funny to see...

I saw a picture of those in a book at borders and I had wondered if they were edited or maybe they were just conceptual images or something. Its funny because I had never seen any info of them until now other than that picture in the book.

But I hope you're not seriously considering adding jet engines to ttd trains. TTD has enough ridiculous futuristic vehicles as it stands :P

Not jets like that train in the pic above, I mean like using a jetturbine with a Afterburner that would be connected to a Genorator at the end and maybe have the exhuast vent out the sides so when the AB is used not only will there be more power the exhuast will thrust it a bit, though of corse, in real life, any and all Cars that come after the Loco would need heat shielding in the front, so a passenger probably cant come first.

Just going to have to point out here, that such ideas, while cool, make no sense whatsoever. While use of perhaps a 747 sized jet turbine (or any high bypass design fitted to a train) would make some modicum of sense, it would need to be put at the rear, and they aren't designed for such low altitude use. They could be converted of course for low altitude use, but except for maglev designs I can't see the need.

As for afterburners:

As the exit velocity increases (relative to free stream), the efficiency decreases. The most efficient jet would have a zero (relative to free stream) exhaust, but this also gives no thrust. So where efficiency is needed (civil airliners, trains in this case) you need high bypass types of engine. Where you want something to go fast, afterburners are good, hence F-22 Raptors have small engines with afterburners, and A380s have large turbofans that almost look like they should scrape the ground.

If one were to make an electric turbofan, it might be quite efficient, as brushless motors are already efficient and as such a prop will work nicely. Problems involve high speed spinning blades at head height.
