ahem... max road vehicles

Post by Andrex »

I have just realized that I'm unable to build more than 240 road vehicles. I have the 'morevehicles' mutiplier set to 4 but this does not help.

The following is part of the TTDPatch documentation:

"For example, morevehicles 2 allows you to buy 2 times 850 vehicles, or 1700 vehicles"

Am I doing something wrong, or are we condemned to 240 vehciles of each type? If this is the limit, I am very disappointed. (don't take it personally Patchman please)

That is the limit set by Chris Sawyer, 240 of each type !!!
Patchman can't change it without having to change the complete source
Well, back to work, lot's of it in the near future

How does Patchman modifies sections of the code to make the changes? Does he have the game source? (I imagine not, I'm not that ignorant). But I wonder why some changes are possible and others simply impossible, when we are just talking about numbers/limits.

He doesn't have the "source code" but he has a disassembler to get the source code, so basically, he has the source code.

OK I have just bought a company with 2 road vehicles and they have been perfectly added into my fleet of vehicles. Now I have 242 road vehicles with no problem.

From this point of view, we can state that it is absolutely possible to have more than 240 vehicles, the only problem is how to add this into the patch.

I've had a company before with 240 trains and used cht:playerID to make a competitor with 240 trains. I then took over his company, and so therefore i have 480 trains. But TTD goes mental. The company screen does not say 480 trains, but it has random gibberish. The train list also goes stupid, being unable to view every train. An action that is not recommended.

 Anyway, the whole point is that It can't be done, Josef also said in the ttdpatch readme, that the limit of 255 is a 'hard' limit, meaning it can't be changed.....Oh well...I once had visions of making computer opponents, using them to build trains and taking them over, in the hope that i could have 5000 trains.. :(

Consist numbers (e.g. trains, road vehicles, etc. as opposed to individual vehicles) are stored in a single byte. The numbers 0 (and AFAIK 255) are special values. The remaining 14 values are a safety margin for buying out other companies, as you've found out.

That's not a big safety margin

Wouldn't it be better to get paid for all the excess vehicles when you do a takeover and just get rid of them ?
Because the thing that happens now is really weird
And leave the stations/tracks you bought so you can decide what to do with them, destroy or integrate them in your own network
Well, back to work, lot's of it in the near future

I had a felling it was a saftey margin

And knew that it was a byte related thing
