When you put the Google Earth things to MicroDEM. It don't accept the files to MDEM.kevin.carbonaro wrote:Where are you having problems exactly, maybe I can help to create your heightmap.

Well, surprisingly, it work, but now I have got a massive map; its 2042x2042...christ. And If I try to take a giant screenshot to see what way up the map is it crashes my computer!
I'll have to have a play, and try, try try again.

What about you? Will you join me when the time comes to be a hero?
Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
Yes, the giant screenshot will take a screenshot of the entire map. It's quite easy to end up with a several gigabyte png file with large maps, so chances are fairly good that you'll run out of memory before you can save the file, and you'll probably have trouble viewing it afterwards even if you do manage to save it.
No-one's more important than the earthworm.
Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
I think the file did get abot about 560mb, then it crashed.

I'm trying to make a map of Canada and the northern US, right from Newfoundland to BC. I've got the DEMS needed, but can't figure out how to thin them in Microdem, there's no option under the "Save" option. Can somebody give me a hand here please?

Dan MacKellar

You know what? I got that problem too. It does work it you save them regardless, though.

Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
Thanks for this , it works a treat !!! Ive just done my first superbly detailed map of South Devon and found without 'thinning' the DEM you get a lot more detail especially when using 2048 x 2048
Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
I tried combining all the DEMS i had for Canada and they weren't meshing up together... kind disappointing after downloading 36+ DEMS... Can anyone get me a map of Canada? Please?

Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
Can anyone help me create a height map of Dublin Ireland?
Ive tried a few times to make a map myself by hand, and its just so difficult.
Id love to play with dublin's commuter network because i know it so well. And since we have no underground and a very old network its not that difficult to build.
Its just the hundreds of towns/areas, several rivers, 2 canals, 2 transport hubs, only 1 major airport and 40 mile range of a commuter network.
Id be very greatful

I don't know if it will be high enough res for a close up of the Dublin area, but I've just made a 2048x2048 heightmap of Ireland. Linkage. Maybe that helps.

Made a map of central europe, well mostly Germany and parts of the surrounding countries, using this and http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=33956. Industries are still random but looks good enough for me so far. Next step: whole of Europe

Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
I have some questions to ask............
After i have downloaded the DEM file from the GoogleEarth, i tried to open those DEM by the Microdem programme.
When i click to open the DEM file, it said " I/O error 104 " or " Access violation at address 00894A8A in module 'microdem.exe'. Read of address 00000001. "
Why? Can anyone help? THX

Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
I would like to create map, 2k x 2k large, with islands in one end and mountains in the other. Is there any way to create heightmaps out of scenarios created in the editor? My idea was to copy and paste a little to get this landscape.

Re: How To: Generate Superb Heightmaps :)
Hi All
great little tutorial, i have a very specific project i'm doing in collage at the moment which involves making a 3D environment of an outdoor rock climbing location; just south of Dublin city, it's an abandoned quarry in a place called Dalkey. I have decided to use the crysis sandbox editor to model this area which is roughly only about 512x512 meters area in real life, so it's pretty detailed area. I'v been racking the internet for three weeks looking for a way to make a detailed height map of the area.
Would i be right in thinking that the method discussed here is for much wider height maps.
Otherwise do people have any ideas for me.?? i have areal photographs and you can get pretty close with Google earth, i'v attached that image
Any suggestions would be most welcome...no matter how wild
regards

New Zealand - North Island and Hobbiton
Hi,
I've just finished a scenario of the North Island of New Zealand from Whangarei to the Nelson / Marlborough region of the top of the South Island.
The towns and industries are approximately correct (with the exception of the far north ocean oil rigs, there to supply Marsden Point oil refinery). Note that there are very few power stations and only two oil refineries. In real life, the railway engineers had to construct the Raurimu rail spiral to limit too steep a grade - see http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/googlemap/2459
