Message arrives - make a sound
Per the subject, when you get an in-game message, could the game make a sound? It's very easy currently to miss messages if your attention is else-where. A quiet, unobtrusive yet not-missible sound is what I'm thinking.

This needs to be mde so that it can easily be turned off becuase there can be a large number of mesages if not continuous.
Oh and wih my knowledge of BASIC I would say that this probably won't be too much work but I don't know how different C is to BASIC

Re: Message arrives - make a sound
When I say message I mean the chat messages you get in multi-player, not the in-game news messages.
And yes, I suppose it should be turn-offable.
It's unlikely to be more work than adding a call to the sound library with a reference to the relevent sound. It would actually be more work to create a decent sound. Unfortunately I can't help with either.

Re: Message arrives - make a sound
Well, I made a sound right now, exclusively for this topic
I never played in multiplayer, so I do not know exactly what kind of sound would I want. But you can do whatever you want with this sound, edit to suit you better, use it somewhere else, comment it or puke on it . If needed, I can correct something or I can make a new one. It's all up to you.
As for the license, it's just a stupid sound so I do not retain any copyright on it, I put it in public domain. I hope that a text file with license is not needed and that's enough for me to say it here

and this is a little smoother version although it seems that there is not that much interest in this. Or maybe my ugly sound made everyone to close their browser

Re: Message arrives - make a sound
So maybe I should wait for OpenGTA and contribute sounds to them :D

Re: Message arrives - make a sound
It's an interesting sound, but I don't think it'd go well with OTTD.
Maybe just a subdued beep would work. It already has repeating beeps for summarised messages.
But thanks anyway.

If you put it in the public domain then no, you don't need to do anything else.I hope that a text file with license is not needed
But thanks anyway.
Re: Message arrives - make a sound
If someone can explain to me what a subdued beep would mean, than I can make another sound. I do not care if any of my sounds would ever get in OpenTTD (or TTDP or wherever or just remain here, sitting alone in this topic ), you want it, I make it

Heh. Well I sort of figured "subdued beep" was self explanatory. And it's only what I think would work. I'm not exactly a sound-knowing guy.
