Welsh place names

Post by John_T »

I think Welsh place names would be a nice addition. I don't think a total Cymraeg (Welsh) translation is necessary but the place names I'd love to see.

You see, place names would be quite easy to implement as many places in Wales are made up of words. I am no welsh speaker but have recently moved to Wales and love the way the place names (their Welsh names) sound.

Aber is a good begginning for a would be place name. My hometown is Abergwaun, (pronounced abergwine). Aber means 'mouth of (river)' and Gwaun is the name of the river that runs into the sea here.

Another example is, Llantrisant. Llan 'church of (name)' tri 'three' sant 'saints'.

And another: Llanddewi-brefi Llan 'church of (name) 'Ddewi' David *by the* -brefi 'stream'.

The Welsh capital, Cardiff's welsh name is Caerdydd. Caer means 'fort' dydd I don't know...

There is a famous TRAIN STATION in north wales called: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch which means roughly 'The Church of St. Mary by the pool with the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's church and the red cave'.

Being from Wales myself (to some degree), it would be quite nice to see some Welsh names. I may look into knocking up a newgrf for this, if I've got the time!

Dydd is day... Caerdydd therefore means Day Fort.

Thanks for that citizen erased, always good to learn new things.

And to XeryusTC for me to make a newgrf personally may be difficult because I am stupid. Though if orudge finds the time, wow, I would be happy!

I haven't so far, but also, it looks a bit more difficult than I originally thought, too. ;) If anyone else wants to have a shot, feel free.

I hacked a Welsh place name NewGRF together. I don't know a single word of Welsh, so I just took your list of words, and randomly put 2, 3 or 4 of them together. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is too long (the limit is 30 letters), but I made sure that its short form, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, is always present on the map.

Note that you need a nightly build, as the latest released version of OpenTTD doesn't support pluggable town names.

If you're looking at how I did it, note that I had to create 4 almost identical chains of words. The first is uppercased, but the other three differ only in their firstbit value, to avoid having the same name part repeated, which would have happened if I had just jumped to the same chain three times.

WOW!

I'm quite astonished, amazed, and pleasently surprised.

Thank you.

This will certainly satisfy my needs for a bit of Welshness in the game! :)

For your information I have built a train station at Llanfairpwllgwyngyll.

I think you have done a brilliant job and although a welsh speaker may find some irregularities (I don't speak welsh either I just copied the list from a book) I reckon that you deserve a medal.
