this topic will be dedicated to the brilliance that occurs in the comedy circuit. ofcourse, my 2 most lighting examples will be Bill Bailey and Stephen Lynch, but i'm sure there's more than this, even. so, do not hesitate to discuss, recommend or simply state that humour isn't your thing.

To start the discussion.... Am I alone in thinking Ricky Gervais isn't as good in stand up as when he was on TV.

The Office and Extras wasn't laugh out loud funny, but it WAS funny. I was the aqwuard pauses and camera work that made both series such gems.
That doesn't work on stage. I'm not saying if he comes up on "Paramount Comedy 1" as a "Live at...." act I'm not going to watch, but I'm not forking out money for him!
He should stick to what he was good at. Since RedDwarf went out of production, I cant think of a show till The Office that was on the level of Faulty Towers etc.

(Which is odd because Craig Charles was brilliant as a stand up live on stage, yet he then went into a Soap?!)

and yes, contradictory to you, i find Gervais much funnier on stage than on TV. The Office is alright, not great, and Extras i've seen a couple of times, but somehow it doesn't really impress me and certainly doesn't strike at the level that Red Dwarf, MP Flying Circus, Blackadder or The IT Crowd did. and whilst he's very different on stage than his characters on shows, i truly prefer the stage-Gervais. t'is just funnier, more random. and random comedy is my personal favourite.

now, upon Graig Charles, the man's brilliant, yet the only standup part i've seen was that on the A to Z of Red Dwarf programme, which featured a small excerpt. i didn't know he was in a soap nowadays though, highly amusing fact that. any chance of knowing where i can find it?

an another note, many of the british quizzes have the essence of comedy. ofcourse, the ever brilliant Never Mind the Buzzcocks springs to mind as a perfect example, but also QI, Have I Got News For You and more recent the thing i saw last night, Would I Lie To You?, which actually was excellent. i'll provide a few links as recommendations down here. and does anybody wonder just like i do, why Stephen Fry never did any standup recently (aside from his mental disorder)?

oh, and i haven't even started on The Mystery Science Theater 3000, which is technically a show, i know, but comedy of some sorts in a way. more about that later, though.

you what?? the IT Crowd most certainly is the best thing that recently got out in the UK, along with things as Big Train, The Fast Show and Green Wing. unsurprisingly, Channel 4 has started to make it's way into the annals of Great British Comedy. truly, i'd rank the IT Crowd with the "big ones" everyday.

hmm, i'd be willing to travel to the UK for a next tour (since i'm dutch, and as such i live in Hilversum, The Netherlands ), but i'm more interested in the new tour Bill Bailey's about to do, and which damn chav Dave has cards for. this actually mainly because i haven't seen much of Charles's works.

that IS quite interesting, and t'will be a an interesting read as such. don't get me wrong, but i already loved the juicy interview parts on my nearly complete imported Red Dwarf DVD collection extras. actually, come to think of it, there was this rather brilliant show featuring Chris Barrie, but i can't recall what it was named. might get it later on, though.

We shall agree to disagree on that one, Its good, but not THAT good. Tho I was amused to see it on TV in the Netherlands last time I was over there for work!

it has been indeed, on quite a few channels even. somehow British comedy isn't a truly big thing in the Netherlands though, except Mr. Bean and the occasional Blackadder fanatic.

ah yes, "Part Troll" truly is one of the best things i've ever seen, although the leading randomness of "Cosmic Jam" thoroughly appealed as well. i found "Bewilderment" to be of a kind of interim-show, although it really was good, especially the owl song. wait, i'll youtube that now, immediatly.

hmm, the Brittas Empire is quite correct, t'was the one i was aiming for. although i get it mixed up with that other quite brilliant British show, Roman's Empire. then again, i get things mixed up all the time apparently, so it's not something new.

well, i still have to get me those QI dvd's, but then again, the Red Dwarf dvd's cost me €30 apiece (at the least), so i reckon the QI ones will be even more. i truly wish to have that QI book as well, it seems to be highly interesting. and amusing, at that.

that's a quality nice excerpt. i love Fry's overly concerned attitude towards the learning process of the panel members on the show, he's like a teacher trying to genuinly teach his students.
