OpenTTD in Debian

Post by matthijs »

As of yesterday, openttd packages are available from the Debian archives. While debian packages have been available for
download from Sourceforge since 0.3.5, Debian unstable users can now simply use apt to install and upgrade openttd.

The package should also be available for users of Debian testing shortly. Unfortunately, we have missed the release of the current Debian stable (etch), but
we will try to include openttd in the backports.org archives soon for users of Debian stable.

Thanks go out to Jordi Mallach for helping me with packaging and uploading the package to Debian.

As far as I've understood Ubuntu, it should follow pretty much automatically when they start preparing the next release. OpenTTD is not a very complicated package, so there shouldn't be any problems with automatically including it in Ubuntu, I think.

Are you sure those files are not actually corrupt? Perhaps you can try to find a version from elsewhere?

If you're convinced that the files are ok, please open a topic on the OpenTTD problems topic instead posting again here. This doesn't sound like a debian-specific issue anyway.

Core duo thing would handle any game with any ammount of players and vehicles IMO

I don't know this stuff too well but i think a 2ghz proc with 1gb ram is more than enough for OpenTTD serv on a 1024x1024 map tough it might get laggy later so you canj ust host 512x512 map

That's good to know. Weren't there some legal wranglings about trying to get OpenTTD into Debian in the past?

Well, I've played 5-player OTTD games on 512x512 with no problems whatsoever hosted on an 800Mhz server before, so there can't be many limits with your hardware.

Are the grfs from the original included in the package?

No they're not, so you need to download the GRFs from this forum or somewhere.

Thats probably what the legal problem was that Grudge referred to. Historically, Debian's done the same thing for Doom - allowed the program & docs to be packaged but required you to have the original (non-free, non-open) game data files.
