[TTDP] Trans-Majestic Railroad

Post by Oleg »

Hi everyone.
This topic features some of my best experience in playing Transport Tycoon Deluxe, I hope you’ll find it interesting too. The game was started in May 2005 and faithfully played until September 2005. I was more than happy to bring the savegame back to life recently, and to actually complete it. The game has not reached 2050 yet, but I feel its major stage is already done. Actually I have built everything that I wanted the way that I wanted – at last uniting TTD and real railroading aspects into a quite successful result.

The setting takes place on the Majestic Bay scenario. Therefore I suppose you already know its background history. The screens below show how the passenger network has been developed to provide some kind of realistic operation. The whole mainline connecting 15 or so towns simultaneously was divided into three parts (divisions), and the stations were assigned either 1st or 2nd class. The local trains stop at all stations but only within one division. The long distance trains are run on the express schedule – stopping at 1st class stations (one such station per division) only and thus providing a link between different divisions. So a passenger can get to a commuter DMU, get to a big station, and then enjoy a comfortable journey in a long-distance train. The whole system works quite well, supported by two airports at the end points – some prefer to travel by air, some by rail. Well, so much for the introduction, here we go.

Welcome to the Trans-Majestic Railroad! This railroad has a long history, you'll learn some of it during the journey in a true steam-hauled retro express train! Out of the train's windows you'll take a look at the fertile plains of the South where first railway tracks were laid more than 100 years ago. Then the railroad will slowly begin to climb the Majestic Mountains, and we'll observe how the thin stretch of railroad became the only vital link of the remote towns and villages to the rest of the World. At last, through the famous Mounting Gate Pass our magnificent train will roll back to the sunshine and warmth - just to see the departure of the fastest passenger trainsets on the TMR! Lots of remarkable facts and views for you to discover. Welcome on board, 1st class, 3rd car, place 7. The train will depart in 25 minutes.
Image

Our steamer sets off soon after the “Endville-Lake Head” commuter train. To the right behind the autumn-colored trees one can spot a small yet remarkable museum - Three Steamers Park. First impression can be misleading, and knowing railfans are frequent visitors to what turns out to be the oldest steam engine on the Railroad - the Х10а 4-6-4 purchased 107 years ago. The engine faithfully hauled oil and wheat for more than 30 years, and was left at its home station (turned into a museum) after the oil wells here were closed for lack of production. Meanwhile our train follows the Southern Mainline. The Northern Mainline that can be seen in the previous shot is now used mainly for hauling oil to the Endville Refinery and other freight services.
Image

Express trains currently do not stop at Prune Town Station. Yet it is the key station of the TMR Southern Division, here the traffic splits into local and long-distance. The station building is relatively new, built following the decision to prevent freight trains from using the Southern Mainline taken after a major collision. Under the bridge light metro cars can be seen speeding towards Lake Head. The new light metro line continues towards South Shore - a small town that used to have big transport problems. After first industry tracks were laid in its suburbs, the Local Authorities have altered the contract with the TMR, and a passenger station here has never been built. For many years a small bus that connected the town with the Lake Head Station was the only link to the outer world. That's why opening of the light metro terminus in South Shore became an outstanding event. Railroad was also happy as the Northern Mainline was already overloaded with freight, so adding ordinary passenger services here was next to impossible.

Lake Head is the first stop on the route. Formerly a fishing village, it has now turned into a vast megalopolis, and the local food processing facilities (that have their own isolated industrial railroad and a large freight station on the mainline) now supply food to all the towns above the snowline. Meanwhile a mail express and a commuter train depart almost simultaneously for Endville.
Image

Lake Head Station marks the boundary between the Southern and the Eastern Division of the Trans-Majestic RR. Here begins the long way up to the mountains - the world of snow, deep forests and small villages. We follow the track built exclusively for upward express traffic, while the mainline is left for freight trains. Behind, the Northern and the Southern mainlines finally merge, and out of the window we can see short but very long food trains climbing the mountain. The downward traffic here is pretty light, so a single track is quite sufficient.
Image

The steamer doesn't even slow down at the Wren's Nest station. This is the terminus station for the Eastern Division trains. When a food consist arrives from the South, some food is distributed right here, that's when this quiet place turns into a busy market. At other time there's most likely no one here, as the air is quite frosty, and the passengers prefer to come right to the departure of a commuter DMU from the last platform.

Out from the deep tunnels called unofficially "the Mines of Moria" the train bursts into a series of nearly transparent bridges. Down in a snowy valley lies a famous village of Henford Hole. The platform there was build as early as in 1950-s, yet it turned out that the slopes were too steep, and the station didn't get a connection with the mainline. Later a food supply service was established, but steeper grades meant higher maintenance cost, and the service didn't seem to be too regular. The appearance of the heavy locomotives solved this problem - a newly built "Henford Rose" layout provides the town with access from both main tracks. An old depot building to the right has been converted into a restoration facility, here a 4-6-4 Hudson aged 87 is being overhauled to resume mainline services. When the old engine's consist first rolled into the depot tracks, two bags with letters sent about 60 years ago were found inside a mail coach. No wonder: mail services in that time were unreliable. At last the time has come to deliver the mail.
Image

After another climb we enter a big freight yard. Here food trains from the South get unloaded, and the food packed into road vehicles is delivered to the neighborhood towns. This station, situated at the summit of the Majestic Mountains, has also seen a lot of northbound traffic since big coal reserves were found here in 1950-s. Soon the Eastern Division was electrified, and for nearly half a century electric locomotives became a symbol of the company's hard work and big success. Yet around the year 2000 TMR decided to stop buying electric stock, so an electric loco is a rare guest here now. A small line servicing the gold mine is a lucky exception (though probably not for long).
Image

The two retro express trains currently run by TMR are scheduled to meet at the Chef's Bridge Station. This station has been upgraded recently when the Trans-Majestic and the Local Authorities have finally agreed on the land cost (and the subsequent payments). Now it is the first class station serving both long-distance and local trains. The 1st platform is mostly used for commuter trains of the Eastern Division including a “C.Bridge-Barley Port” local service (that branches from the mainline and heads straight down). When the track is empty it can be used by passing freight consists as well.

Snowy forests still dominate the view out of the windows but the great descent toward the foot of the mountains has already begun. Generic Ridge, a small town with a big station, lies to the left. When the railroad first came to this place the local council insisted on its passing through the town. As the company's funds were rather tight and it could not afford tunneling here, the line had to climb the neighboring cliffs which greatly reduced the speed of the southbound coal trains. About 20 years ago the ugly loops were at last substituted by deep tunnels, and a new stretch of mainline was build to speed up the non-stop traffic. Currently the station became the northern terminus for the commuter trains, its role sufficiently increased owing to the branch line to Tram Head. Meanwhile we have the last opportunity to glance at the snowy landscape, soon it will be quite warmer outside.
Image

Built at the foot of the Majestic Mountains the city of Mountain Gate offers a small rest for the long-distance travelers. Until 1945 it was a terminus station, and in winter there was no safe way of getting to the mountains. After quite a bit of landscape works the company was able to bring its trains higher and higher - until the North and the South lines met at the summit. Now we can travel through the mountains in style and comfort, and share the travel memories with the fellow travelers at a station cafe - or see the fastest Superexpress commuter trains depart from the commuter platform.

Well, that’s all for today (or rather tonight). Hope you had some fun too. Good luck :)

Thanks for the comment, ISA. What's wrong with jpg? I can do a batch conversion if necessary.

EDIT: I usually choose between png and jpg according to the resulting size. Here the screenshots total to about 5.5MB in jpg but exceed 10MB in png. So what's the deal?

Deal is that JPEG(jpg) uses color lossy compression. So the image is smaller and colors aren't what they used to be!
Edit: jpg seems like dirty :) no offence

http://ttdrussia.net/users/mudir/ttd/SCR10.jpg is over 500KB. Had it been png, it could've been just 100KB with the same quality, since TTD doesn't have more than 256 colours anyway.

It really doesnt matter if its jpg...!

I really like some of these shots, as the railways cruize over the landscape rather than just destroying whats in there path. The gradual hill clmibs are cool as well. The tunnels on SCR11.jpg wich go at varied hieghts and are folowed by a bridge look cool, and images with the simplicty of SCR10.jpg are always nice to see

Ben_Robbins_,
thanks for your nice comment. In fact the station at Mountain Gate (with two-level tunnels) did require quite a bit of landscaping, since originally one could hardly find a place for a one track station. But I tried to do it very gradually, perhaps adding one platform in 30 years or so. Besides, the gradual climbs also required earthworking, but that's the way it's done in the real world too - the ground is leveled so that the grade is kept to minimum.

To all,
Unfortunately, converting the existing (high quality) jpg into png gives almost double size, and I don't have the original pcx files. Yet I'll consider png in future.

Oleg, those are rather outstanding pictures from you - I've never seen any of your shots before, but these are... well, lets say don't take so long next time!

Those are really quite good :)). Thankyou for sharing them with us :D

Thank you very much for this appreciation, and for the inspiration: this game was from the beginning played under the impression of your (in fact your, Cornelius', DanMack's and Purno's) stories posted in the screenshots thread about 1.5 years ago.

Railroads take long to be constructed. But I'll look into it :)

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas!
The journey isn't finished yet, and here is the final set of screenshots of the TMR.

After a small break at the Mountain Gate station the magnificent steamer sets off again and enters the only remaining bottleneck junction of the Northern Division. Here both commuter DMUs and heavy freight trains have to use a short double track stretch. About 10 years ago a plan was proposed for separating traffic including massive bridge reconstruction and moving the narrow gauge track further to the North. Yet after the local Narrow Gauge Preservation Society voiced its protest the plan was abandoned, and now dispatchers have to do their best to avoid delays here.

Image

Looking out of the window we see the skyscrapers of Green Hill. This is the only city with two separate passenger train stations, one serving Mountain Gate - Friendly commuter line and the other dedicated to the "superexpress" Green Hill - Wrung Out Bay service. In the beginning it was planned to widen the existing station, yet the local authorities were totally against any works in the city centre. Therefore the company bought a couple of old houses in the outskirts and built another train station there. The two stations were then connected by a tram line.
Image

Leaving the busy streets of Green Hill, we find ourselves surrounded by thick woods. For many years the double track we are following was used as a mainline for the Northern Division, and to the right there was a large juction serving an oil processing facility. When the whole northern seaside was turned into a Nature Preservation Park, the facility was demolished, and building of the Green Hill-2 Station made the old mainline redundant. Later emerging express and tourist services required a new stretch of track to be built right on the seashore, and the old piece of track was rebuilt in another direction.

For some time the passengers have a unique opportunity to enjoy the view over the sea while the train crosses vast totally uninhabited areas. The sound of steam engine here creates a warm alternative to the cold splash of big blue waves... Nobody notices the new Oil Refinery to the left, built totally at the expense of the company only a year before the output of the nearby oil wells dropped 4 times. This very event caused TMR to look for new usages of the industrial line - and, as a result, to establish the retro express service that we are now using.
Image

The train is approaching its final destination, and seashore views are slowly giving place to suburban landscapes. We are now leaving the formerly industrial line that continues toward gold mines and oil wells further to the North. The covered platform was constructed this way to receive gold from the mines and bring it to to the city bank. For security purposes gold is unloaded at night only, so during daytime the station is empty, its personnel having a good time on the nearby beach.
Image

The short single track passage suddenly joins the commuter mainline. From now to then the express EMU-s slide by, yet the signals pattern rarely permits more than one trainset at a station. When the old mainline was still in use, this large number of tracks was used by freight traffic mostly, now it is a quiet station though it plays a big role as the long-distance terminus for this part of the world.
Image

Steam days are back in their glory, as the magnificent engine smoothly rolls into the Run Out Inlet Station. Some of the passengers are ready to leave the train to board a South-bound commuter EMU, others slowly walk towards the light metro station nearby. A couple of tourists switch to the neighboring trainset that makes a small stop here before the reverse loop at Wrung Out Bay a bit to the North. Here lies another railroad museum with steamers and early EMUs. While the preserved engines celebrate their 80+ birthdays, the rebulit one can be heard not far away starting on its back journey toward EndVille. Back through the seaside forests, big cities, up into the snowy mountains, and then down to fertile plains, lakes and fields, uniting the region's past and present with a non-forgettable image of live history.

Raichase, Jim Powers, huge thanks for the comments! I'm using the Majestic Bay scenario, it was posted by Cornelius about 1.5 years ago. The most challenging fact about it is that there's no middle part of the map at all, and you have to build a very long network instead of the usual short net-style railroad lines. Not to mention nicely balanced distances between towns and a very realistic relef.. You can get the scenario here, though I wonder why it has only 181 downloads, as compared to 780+ at ttdrussia.net. Many thanks go to Cornelius for sharing his wonderful scenario with all tt-forums and ttdrussia users
