British and Welsh town names (UPDATE)

Post by PaulC »

I've been trying to teach myself how to code over the last few weeks, and this is the first grf I've created that's fit for any kind of public release. Unfortunately I've just found out that there already is a Welsh town names grf, so this feels like something of a hollow achievement. (Although in my defence I had to do a fair bit of digging just to find it.) Nevertheless, I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out and it has certainly been a worthwhile experience, so I thought I'd share it anyway. Hopefully next time I'll be able to come up with something a little more unique!

Might as well post this here instead of starting a new topic. I've never been satisfied with the default English town names in TTD, so I've coded this grf of real British place names. Should go nicely with PikkaBird's updated UKRS! :)

Nice one mate. Very nice indeed.

EDIT: Except it doesnt work for me :D.

Not quite sure where the problem may lie. Any particular place in the config the newgrf line has to go?

In what way is it not working? I've just tried it on mine again and I'm not having any problems. I assume you have newtownnames switched on in your cfg? :?

I've uploaded the grf again so give it another go. Beyond that I'm not sure what to say. :(

Bugger. Is it giving you an error message or anything? AFAIK it shouldn't matter where it goes in your cfg, but I suppose you could try moving it about and see what happens.

Read above...

Some nice town names!

Spotted from round here so far:

Dudley, Halesowen, Warley (Nearly me!), Wednesbury, Wolverhampton.

If you've got Warley, you'd BETTER have Brierley Hill or Stourbridge. :P

EDIT: Kidderminster too ^_^

I'm fairly sure Stourbridge is in there. No Brierly Hill, but there is a Burgess Hill if that's any good to you? :P

Sounds like you've not done too badly though!

Re: British and Welsh town names

Post by PaulC »

Time for an update...

I found a glitch in the British town names grf that was causing a section of names to be missed out, so I've now fixed that and thrown in a few more names for good measure. No doubt most people won't notice the changes, but it runs a lot more smoothly now, and Dave should be pleased.

Enjoy!
