Hi all. I'm having my vacation right now and I'm totally bored. Then I had an great idea, why not create a scenario for OTTD? But I don't know how to build a good scenario, so could you guys give me some tips?

step 1, create a terrain

this can be random, or something base on real life. completly flat is no fun, but might work depending what you want to do with it.

step 2, place towns

just place towns, these can be random, or placed to represent a real life town on a map that is suposed to mimic a real town.

step 3, place industries

even on realistic maps these rarely represent real industries, my best advice is to just press the "Place many random industries" button, then maybe add and demolish a few afterwards.

How about a Benelux scenario on a large (not huge) map. That'll keep you busy I guess... Almost all the resources in the standard industry in temperate are available in real life.

Raffinery: Rotterdam, Antwerp;
Steel Plant: IJmuiden (Antwerp?);
Coal Mines: South-Limburg & Ardennen;
Iron ore: I'm not sure about this one, Ardennen? or West-Germany?;
Oil Rig/Oil Wells (Let's pretend it's a gas plant): Noordzee, Groningen;
Power Station: almost anywhere;
Farm: wherever;
Factory: any place you like;
Lumber Mill: anywhere you like (prefer North-East Netherlands)
Forest: Veluwe, Ardennen, West-Vlaanderen;

How about it?

Great Britain

Post by GiZ »

Hey Guys. I built a small map featuring Great Britain, Island and parts of North France. I tried to make it as exact as possible but beacause i had no HMAP i draw it free hand, so it will differ slightly from the reality. Would be glad about some feedback :)

It would seem that a great big chunk of eastern England between Northumberland and Norfolk has been replaced with sea. Also, Cumbria seems to be missing... along with Aberdeen!

For an accurate heightmap of the UK, checkout the TGP branch. There is a new feature allowing use of PNG heightmaps as the terrain for a new game or scenario (derived from the PNGload patch).

I have included 5 heightmaps as well: USA, Meditteranean, San Francisco, Africa and Western Europe. The W.Europe map is more focussed on the UK.

You need an SVN client - eg. TortoiseSVN. TGP will make it to trunk in the next fortnight or so, so it will be available in the nightly build.

If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.

I made this scenario some time ago ... its supposed to be a bit harder than those everything-is-flat scenarios :D

any suggestions?

p.s. the screenshot shows the Delta area -- in my opinio a good place to start

A bit late perhaps, but in reply to the Great Britain scenario a few posts back, I thought it was a bit squashed, and you DID miss some bits out. Here's my scenario I made years ago, there's some problems yes, Cumbria is disproportionately large (cos I live there :p) and some industries are wrong, but meh, I like it.

I bring ye:

Gold rush!

This is a 512x1024 map.
Get transport links deep into the mountains to bring home the resources. Remember, the deeper you go, the more you get you get.

Advised sets:Anything North American. I use the Arctic Renewal Set for this.
