Multiple Train speed increases

Post by madman »

As im sure many of you remember, TTD-Patch used to allow the increase in train speed as you added more trains (up to 4 i think) which meant that the first electrics could reach nice speeds of about 150 (and more importantly you could comically change it so that you could have 10 early trains together and reach daft speeds as long as it didnt exceed the game max.

anyway, has anyone made a patch to return this (ace) feature to OTTD? and if not, is anyone interested in doing so? - i know we have a pseudo equivalent in that the powers are added together, but i always enjoyed the increased speed option.

Well, you can use the physics patch. Turn realistic acceleration on, and use the "Disable speed limits for train engines" switch. Then the physics (i.e. resistance forces and the power of the train) will determine the maximum speed of the train. More train engines means more power* and that means your train will be able to go faster.

*And a little more resistance, but force delivered by the amount of power you add is usually larger than the magnitude of the additional resistance forces.

Hi, But i do not know how to use the PHYSICS PATCH, could you please step by step tell me? Thanks.

It is not so easy. You'll have to apply the changes of the patch to the source code and then compile it. However, I cannot guarantee that the code of the patch will indeed patch properly, since changes in the source code may cause conflicts.
If you do not know what I'm talking about, nevermind. Then you need to get a precompiled binary from someone. You'll have to ask someone.

thats like saying if u tie another car to yours and they are both driven to gether they should go faster.

They do. That is because of the reduced air drag per vehicle. If you couple two identical vehicles, the power (and hence traction force) will be doubled, but the resistance by air drag is only slightly larger than with one vehicle. Hence the ratio of traction force compared to resistance force (at a given speed) is "better" if you have more vehicles. So they will go faster.

To a certain degree that's true, but eventually the rule of diminishing returns sets in. Each added train will only add a little bit of speed, so what you'll get in reality is slightly increased speed, but greatly increased acceleration and pulling power.

Vehicle speed is governed also by the maximum rotating speed of the traction machinery. A car has a red line on the engine rev counter for example.

Trains are designed to produce optimum performance in the design speed band and the final drives are geared accordingly. Going much beyond the top of the range will damage traction motors, and pistons and rods will break and fly off steamers . . . . really!

Of course if the balancing speed for a particular load is below the maximum speed of any vehicle in the consist, then adding more power will certainly improve progress.

A nice list of possible breakdowns here!

If you ask me, the biggest reason why extra engines add successively less extra speed is because higher speeds cause higher resistance, no? In comparison the other factors are just (relatively) minor details, I think. Mind you this probably has been discussed in more detail in the physics patch thread.

EDIT: (hint, hint, that'd be a better place for a physics discussion?)
NB: the below challenges are still open for submission, so feel free to perform necromancy on them!
