Old engines (1810-1900)

Post by prissi »

Has anybody drawn an old engine?

I am from the simutrans development team, so I apologize for asking here; but we really need some engine built in before 1857 and some from 1870-1880 or so. It would be great if somebody of your great artists here could donate something. I could refine it, but I am very bad at drawing from scratch. Again sorry for asking here, but here are so many great artists.

I think someone called "Raven" drew Stephensons Rocket once. Don't know if he is still around though.

Are there any palette limitations in Simutrans?

Thank you very much. Espeically the winer one is very typical for the 1860-1870ies with their large wheels.

There are virtually not palette limitation. The pak program will convert them to 16Bit (together with storing the artist name) and makes it virtually impossible to steal them easily , since there is no way back. But the shading is different, the Simutrans sun comes from lower left. However, mirroring and some correction works quite nice.

The oldest locomotive I drew is the Swiss Ed 2x2/2 Mallet, which was introduced around 1890. You'll find it here, in two liveries.

I also drew the 221A Atlantic of the french Compagnie du Nord, introduced in 1900 (the series name was 2.600). I didn't publish it because I felt it was a bit too much of an early engine to put in TTD, especially because the FRSet contains 20 steamers, but if you're interested, just ask and I'll post a sprite. Here and here you get some pics of the real thing and here's a model of it.

If you're interested in electric models too, I also did the PO E1, also called Boîte à Sel, a 3rd rail electric engine built in 1900. Would that be useful to you?

The French set has some steamers from the first decade of the XX century, I didn't list them here because you're probably interested in older models. If the period 1900-1910 is okay for you, just tell me and I'll repost the sprites.

Also, I was keen on drawing some older engines (1870 - 1900), but I'll only do it if and when the mighty Patch developers allow for starting dates prior to 1921.

Just one question, do you need animated sprites?

Simutrans has a full timeline, and I have some engines after 1900. But I still think the boite a sel is very nice addition.

Unfourtunately simutrans doesn't support animated sprites, so parts of your beautiful work is lost. I would also like to use the 221A, if possible. Just pm or email me.

Cool! Here you can find the 221 Atlantic. I decided it'd be better to put it here rather than let it rust in a directory inside of my hard disk ;)

It is basically derived from the French 230's (the opposite happened in the real world: the 230 was actually derived from the 221!). What do you guys think about it? I'd love to squeeze it in the FRset, but then we'd start having a bit too many engines. We'd certainly hit the 116 limit.

To Prissi: glad you're interested in this stuff. As I said, we have a bunch of engines from the first decade of the XX century (040TA of 1910, 131TB of 1908 and 031 130 TA of 1905). Just drop a line if you think you could use any of them.

Cheers
