OpenTTD Challenge Spinoff 2 (beta)

Post by Korenn »

The new challenge spinoff!
completely rewritten and a lot more stable, mostly thanks to the OTTD dev team.

For those who do not know what this is:

The Challenge Spinoff adds a goal to the game.
You are the owner of a transport company who has been invited by a country to help develop their cities. The towns need infrastructure, transport services and food and water to grow!

windows users: download the zip file, extract into ottd directory, start the "spinoff 2" executable.
other OSes, download source and compile ;)

features:

- more cargotypes
- more industries
- some more vehicles
- six town classes
- alternative map generation
- towns need specific cargo to grow
- towns are claimed by the player that transports the most cargo to them
- population graph and objective overview windows
- improved industry minimap
- can be installed next to normal ottd
- should work in multiplayer :!:

This is a playtest beta. The game is basically stable, which means that I've not been able to crash it. It still needs severe multiplayer testing, however.

If you find a bug, please post it here, with a description of what you were doing, and a savegame if applicable. Don't use any .grf files other than the standard files.

have fun!

new version (2.02) [13/06/2005]
Fix: It is no longer possible to load scenario's when starting a network game
Fix: 'steel' is now called 'metal' (because it is made from copper ore, iron ore and/or coal)
Fix: no more statues & fountains that drop the population of your town
Fix: when a company closes down, the town claimer statistics are reset for that player
Fix: fund new industries window is now displaying properly
Fix: power now properly increases town growth
Fix: new network identification string "OCS v2.02"

Note [28/04/2006]
OCS will not be updated to the latest version until the New Map Array is complete.

sure:

a note when you install this in the standard ottd dir: it uses the original openttd.cfg (I'll fix that later) so takes over those settings, which might not work.

in particular, make sure the AI amount is set to 0 and you do not include newgrfs. AI doesn't work correctly and newgrfs aren't tested.

Nice job Korenn! From those screenshots though it doesn't look as though it included your ultra-brill landscape generator? Is it included, or planned to be included?

For you guys who find the economic model boring, download this challenge and try it, if it is anything like the first one, it is a whole lot of fun and I'll guarantee you will not be bored.

Me, Singaporekid and Lakie had a game of it(with two people joining, but I can't remember who), and I found it ran fine. It lagged but I actually blame Kid for that for he seems to lag when it comes to any OTTD(he was server).

My only let down was the fact that it didn't have the landscape generator cause the random maps......well they suck would be putting it nicely.
Yarr, thar princess is in 'nother castle!

Steel mill accepts copper ore, but where does the copper go?

Hy
I found two bugs. The first is when the autosave save the game it save as .sav file, but the normal save has .ocs. I have to rename the autosave because with .sav it isn't in the load screen.

The second bug is at the station I can't see the waiting food. I attached a savegame, the train takes livestocks and grains to the Food Processing Plant, but at the station there is no food. Later the buses deliver food to the city.

ps: I renamed the savegame to .sav for uploading. To load rename to .ocs

That is definitely a bug. thanks for reporting.

I'll look into it. Is it only the displaying of cargo that's flawed (what I mean is, can you see a rating there?) Is food the only cargo doing this?

regarding the map: I'll include my map generator after the weekend.

- And the new cargo types dont displayed in the station window...
All of them i think
I hope it will be fixed :)

In my first version the steel mill produced 'metals' instead of 'steel'. I might still change that to make more sense ;)

Hi Korenn,

Can you change the version string (in the win32 release) to something meaningfull? It is now "Challenge\ Spinoff" but this is not so good for running multiple versions.

I suggest you use somethin like "csB2", this allows for you to release beta3: "csB3" and so on.

edit:
Mmmm, I was placing a station and this happened (in multipayer):

WARNING: player 1 (IP: 172.27.80.85) tried to execute a command as player 0, kicking...
dbg: [NET] DiNo made an error (wrong player-id in DoCommand) and his connection is closed
*** DiNo has left the game (wrong player-id in DoCommand)

edit:
Not all industries are in "fund new industry"

edit:
There are many desyncs in the game. It is almost not playable. On which openttd release is your game based? I am asking because in some version just around 0.4.0.1 a desync bug was fixed.

There needs to be a limit in the number of cities you can claim, I'd say ten would be a good number, because on a large map, you can set up bus services everywhere and win the game in about two years

On that screenshot a shoppingmall is exactly the same as a Oil Refeniry.

In real life a soppingmall sems different it is build in a large city and passengers will travel to it.

yep, this is weird in the game, there even are shopping malls in middle of no-where.
Doesn't anybody think there are a little too many industries on a single map?
Nope not all dodo's are dead (yet), one has survived!!!

I wonder why shopping mall building is gone in OTTD. I remember it from TTD and TTDPatch

Anyway, I'll check out this nice mod :D
