He sent a post this morning at 06:46. Is it possible to lose a password in
such a short space of time? And as he is using OE, then it should save
passwords shouldn't it? Unless this unique "feature" was not in OE4.
I guess he doesn't want to go back to use the terrible Deja.

Yeah I hope he does. I noticed posting figures have reported a dramatic
downswing today in light of this incident. I guess 3DTT is almost the major
topic of this group now.

It is possible to loose them in nanoseconds...
And as he is using OE, then it should save

Yes, I used this feature and forgot about the paper where it is noted. But
there was a connection problem and OE used this chance to delete my pw and
prompted me to re-enter it. Since it is a 8-cyphered number I am not able to
keep it in my unperfect biological brain. I searched this paper for 3 hours
then I gave up.

I guess he doesn't want to go back to use the terrible Deja.
I would have use it in the institute where I can use Internet for free
(although it is so slow I am dying). But today I was not in, I had to manage
some private things, as selecting an suitable school for my son who will
visit it this year.

No, it is the [OT]... 8^/
OTing in threads is impossible to stop. Even so, I enjoy them.

Look at the 3DTT debate thread started by me. A perfectly on topic thread.
And now look at it. Lots of separate OT discussions. There is nothing wrong
with this, and I have nothing against it. Threads deliberately started as
Off Topic, are few and far between. It happens on every newsgroup. It's
strange to see how it happens.

A serious suggestion. I've got a memory like a sieve, and pieces of
paper can be lost, so I've got a directory where I store all my
passwords.

I'm not especially worried about security - the only ones likely to have
access to my machine are my wife and the dog.

Oh yeah, especially funny when your harddrive burns out like mine one year
ago. Or if a virus erases some files as happened to MrM!ke last Xmas.

My password is of no bis secretism because I have a flat rate. Only
telephone connection costs me DM 0,03 / min.

I usually store my passwords on paper in my cupboard. There is no hacking
technology which could reach them there.

What is smug? I don't know this word, I have to ask.

I have a secondary harddrive in an exchangable case. From time to time I
make a mirror of my entire system. That should be safety enough. I also have
copies of important documents in the internet where I can download them if
necessary.

Tapes are funny, too, hehe. I know somebody who made backups on tapes over
two years. Then the crash came and he wanted to restore. Unfortunately there
was no magnetic film on the tapes anymore. It has been rubbed off while
usage.

When my harddisk crashed one year ago I had no backup, but I succeeded in
restoring the drive and voilá: I am today still running my
Win95-installation from 1997!!

You obviously don't install/uninstall very much as I have to delete then
reinstall Win 98 at least every 6 months. (I have a 1Gb for backup purposes,
it is not much of a problem really.)

I had to do that with Win95, but to be fair to Microsoft Win98 has been
far more stable (for me, anyway).

I'd use Linux if enough apps were to be ported to it.

In fact, on my newer PC Win98 is more stable than WinNT, but that's due to a
dumb broken driver :-(
I will change to Linux completely as soon as I learn C++

It might be more stable but I don't like it. IMO Linux is no operating
system but an OS-construction kit. Very nice for freaks, unuseable for
normal people.
If the developers who made excellent work on the technical side would have
put only a bit more into the shell then Linux probably would have much more
users than it has today.
I am an old DOS user since 1986. Whenever I say Linux is unneccesarily
overcomplicated and should have been designed differently I always get the
answer that I do say this only because I am used to DOS and Windows. But in
the institute I am currently learning medical informatics there were people
who did not know anything about computers. I watched them learning and I saw
them becoming familiar with DOS much quicker than with Linux.

It's nice to hear a programmer say that! I study Computer
Science and, at my university, all the computers dual-boot
into either NT/Linux depending on your choice. Most of the
students and teaching staff rave about Linux as the dominant
OS of the future - hah!
If the developers who made excellent work on the technical side would have

Exactly. From what I can make of it, it's klunky, amateurish
and generally horrible when compared to Windows. Also, you
really need to know how to use the Linux command-line for a
lot of tasks - how 80's, how wonderful... Overall, I found it
about as user-friendly as a cageful of starving tigers.

Same sort of experience here as well. For me, I see more and
more people switching back to WinNT after having tried out
Linux (often for quite a while). I often wonder how well
Linux would be received if most of the computing press
didn't hate Microsoft so much. For me, much as I support the
idea of an open-source OS, Linux is a massive step backwards,
especially when we should be concentrating on making
computers more user-friendly.
