Trains
Trains
I've started a new company in Desert-land, and I was just wondering, looking at
the trains... in Desert and Arctic (they use the same train engines) they're
not very fast, which makes it more realistic, because most trains (except for
the rare high speed trains) don't go much faster than 80 mph. (Uhh... 130
km/hr) So in the Desert and Arctic scenarios, the trains are more even and you
have to balance them.
Now my point. Do you like horsepower or max speed in a train? On my flatter
routes I have a lot of faster trains, but on the high grade routes, I use
highpower trains almost exclusively.

About the Desert/Arctic stuff, it really is difficult at the start of the
game with low horsepower, low speed trains, you can never get them up them
mountains. I usually wait until later before I start to connect up cities up
there.
I usually prefer horsepower, but later on in the game, at around 1990-2000,
power is irrelavent, and I almost always go for the fastest trains, but
having said that, there aren't many to choose from anyway.
Power is essential, as the higher the power, the faster the train goes eg.
If a train of 1,000 hp and another train of 2,000 hp are pulling a 500 tonne
train with both at max speed of 80mph, then the power train will of course
go faster, as the extra power will enable it to get closer to the max speed.
They're my views, how about yours?

At the beggining, the 55 mph steam engine (don't remember the game name, I
changed all of them. I used some of them from the demo of TTO... I believe that
one is a 'Stainer') isn't very good. It's slow, not too powerful, but there's
nothing else to use.
I haven't gotten too far, so I haven't gotten a chance to upgrade it yet.
And yes, once you get the hyper-fast trains (monorails and MagLevs) and the
electric powered ones in the normal scenario, horsepower is really irrelevant.
The 400 mph MagLev (Chimura?) has a LOT of HP. Not sure exactly, but I think
it's 25,000...
Are you sure about the power-speed ratio? I always thought that eventually ALL
trains will accelerate to their maximum speed... if you've got long enough
track.
With that said, I have another queston. Has anyone actually ever used that
dinky little 40 mph train that looks like a car? It's got really cheap
operating costs, though...

Re: Trains
Hp only affects acceleration, if 2 engines have the same top speed, they
will both get to that speed given a sufficiently long straight. The
minimum length of that straight will be shorter for the higher Hp loco.
In addition, the loco with more power will lose less speed, more slowly
on gradients than the lower powered one.
In that respect, you're right to use high hp/lower speed locos on hilly
or stop/start routes. I always use the highest speed loco I can (read
latest), even if it has less power than an older slower one. The only
exceptions to this would be a passenger shuttle service between two
stations (generally with ~1500 peeps waiting) close together, in this
instance high hp is preferable as the train never gets to it's top
speed. Even this becomes academic with monorail/maglev.
