screenshots on the website

Post by Patchman »

I can't see half of them...

None of the UFO shots work, the main shot doesn't work. Anybody else
have the same problem?

For example, if I directly enter the URL of the first UFO shot
(http://www.ttworld.itgo.com/cgi-bin/fra ... cs/UFO.png) I get

"File Not Found

The requested URL /pics/UFO.png was not found on http://www.ttworld.itgo.com.
Contact webmas...@www.ttworld.itgo.com to correct the problem.
Do you accidently use capital letters in your file name? "

They were broken earlier on. The silly FTP program went and renamed all the
files in caps. I have adjusted them accordingly.

Please revisit. Before you do, ensure that you empty your temporary internet
files.

The link still points to "UFO.png", I suppose that really should be
"ufo.png" instead. When I try to load "ufo.png" the server tells me I
can only download images if I get there from a proper link.

I don't understand the problem here. It seems that the server is NOT case
specific on images. The picture should load fine.
It does on mine, and other people have told me it does too.
The link does point to UFO.png, but it still opens ufo.png.

I have emptied my temp files, and I always get the image. There should be
nothing wrong with the site at all, after a proof-checked every page.

I dont get the image displayed.

The webserver is 100% case sensitive. I dont know how you are getting
that image...
Ok, I'll change the HTML. Whether it'll make a difference or not...
And btw.. is it such a good idea to use PNG? A lot of older browsers
can't display it, and I think that since TT is a fairly old game,
perhaps people with old computers (with old browsers) are going to be
wanting to look at the site.
I used PNG, as it's easy, and you don't lose quality. It's also quick.
Anyway, there's no excuse to have an old browser. They're free!!!
I always make sure I have the latest version of IE.

If he's maybe loading it on his own machine it won't be case sensitive,
but once it's uploaded it will be. I've had a lot of trouble with that

Yeah, but if you've got an old machine you might be running an old
DOS/Windoze or not have enough resources for these newer browsers.

Anyway, if that's your thinking, how come the buttons on the side are
not only all fuzzy but are large .jpgs that take an age to download? All
menus must download virtually *instantly* or else the person looking at
the site will just move on. And it's not as if you dont have any
competition!
They will go faster, once I've removed the damn sounds. Or at least shrunk
them.

I've changed the HTML, and I've found my real site maker (FrontPage 2000) as
I was having to use Frontpage Express.

They should be working now. Everything is all in lower case.
Remember to empty your temp internet files before you visit.

More importantly - http://www.anybrowser.org. Perhaps Eddie should take a look!
I did and I left none the wiser. Linking to other pages is not the way to
create a website.
I am going to download Netscape Communicator, but it'll probably end up
setting itself as the default browser.
Netscape Navigator/Communicator is far inferior to Internet Explorer

If you are using the internet from school, uni or work, you might not
have any choice about which browser you use.
I suppose so, but most unis usually have the latest browser.
Our school doesn't. Netscape 3.0 (all java disabled)

I have explained, that it's the midi which slows the site down. There are
meant to appear in 7 seconds. Which is ok, because as soon as you load, the
first ones display almost straight away. You read them and by then, another
one has appeared, maybe even two or three.
They are fuzzy because as you know if they weren't slightly fuzzy, it would
take even longer.
What's the alternative? What you are saying doesn't make sense. It's either
JPG or GIF. It can only be JPG. ]
Josef has got it right. Burn all GIF's. Even animated ones, as there should
be animated PNG's
The maximum size an image should be is 3000 bytes. All the buttons in the
index frame are below 3000 bytes.

I agree in many ways. I have often tried to use non-microsoft software for
the sake of not using microsoft software, but often other software just
doesn't cut it. Bill Gates will rule, and maybe that's just fine. I dunno.

True....Upto a point......I'll explain in a sec.....

Aaaargh.....How can you say this and not laugh?!

I really hate Microsoft because of a couple of easy points.......Windows is
a b*gg*r..It really is.......Microsoft just cornered the market by making
sure that it was the only OS to be shipped out with a new PC (Sparing the
average customer the hassle of testing out new OS's in their own
time.....Which I found very easy to do when we used to have DOS. (I was a
PC-Dos man myself for those old enough to remember it all BTW)

The other thing is Tweak AI......It comes complete on the Windoze 98
CD.....But it ISN'T a warrentied program!

Try Opera then, it makes IE/Netscape look like the resource hungry
bloatware they really are. Only uses standard HTML as well, no
extensions, so all sites that work woth Opera should work an *any*
browser. ~1Mb download too!

What about using images "alternatives" (<IMG ALT="...">), so that we can see
what is the text of the images even if they are not donwloaded? That is why
the ALT parameter exists.

Eddie?

It not just for that....If you are blind you can get a browser that will
actually SPEAK to you.....And for those to work you MUST have the ALT tags
in......Don't forget the blind don't need to see the pikkys but they need
the layout to be right.....

Oh and another thing....There are business's that have their browsers set to
NOT show pictures so that the connection is better and if they think they
want to see the pikky they just right-click and 'Show Picture'

And don't forget its also good HTML......

DOS is a good system for games. It does never freeze, you can install only
the drivers you really need. You don't have to wait for 1 minutes when your
computer decided to clean its swap file...
but it is not very easy to learn.

Finally, the major good thing of DOS is that TT works perfectly on it!
The other thing is Tweak AI......It comes complete on the Windoze 98
It's called Tweak UI. I find Win98 not wise enough to speak about AI.

I'll do that, but its not a case of pictures not downloading, it's pictures
downloading too slowly.
However the change of tune on the site should increase the downloading speed
of the images.
