[WIP] Robot Rail Cars (RC1 INSIDE! incl. new WASTE industry)

Post by Loewe13 »

What do you think of robot rail cars for Locomotion?
Because after 2010 it would be nice to have more choices than only the normal transport systems.
A rail car would be a containerwagon as big as a CE2/2 Tram and would carry about 50-100 units of each cargo and would drive on its own, so without a locomotive.
but remember, rail cars need other track designs than all others because each rail car only needs one square, but you can couple them and then they would be long enough for normal track designs.

Because of the positive responce, I made a Rail Cars Beta with the following Rail Car Types:
-CHEMICALS & OIL RAIL CAR
-GRAIN & COAL & IRONORE RAIL CAR
-PAPER & LUMBER & STEEL RAIL CAR
-FOOD & GOODS RAIL CAR
-PASSENGERS RAIL CAR
-LIVESTOCK RAIL CAR
-MAIL RAIL CAR
Additional:
Own bridgetype
Own stationtype
Own signals (1 colorlight 1 semaphone)
Own houses (RRC 1-7) Producing waste
Own industry (Waste Processing Plant - accepts waste and produces chemicals)

Comming Soon:

Track can be crossed with every other tracks, and the Rail Cars Track can be combined with the normal Railway Track but than you cannot place any signals or stations on this combined part of track.

In Beta 3 some vehicles halted when climbing a hill, now there is a HELP RAIL which you can build on the slopes, so that the RRCs will not stop and drive up the hill with full speed. because of that help rail you can save money when you dont need the Help Rail by not building it :D
Also updated is that there is a Mail Car

Waste Containers are displayed as red barrels.

if you wanna transport waste you better start in the year 2020 because the houses which produce it, are build about 2015-2020. and also produce very large amounts of passengers.

HAVE FUN :D

PS: be careful with the RRC houses they expand expotencialy when laying a road near to them

What i mean are a kind of robotwagons, they have their own engine, can carry an amount of cargo or passengers and drive automaticaly like a big train. you can use them one by one or couple them together and transport very big amounts of cargo.
and they are each as small as the CE2/2 Tram

for passengers and mail this is a good idea. however it's not a good idea for frieght as longer trains are more profitable for frieght.

if you couple them you can have a railcar train of 19 railcars in a 16 field long station so also big amounts of freight are possible (19*75=1425t freight) that should be enough ;-)

the rail cars use a modified version of the narrow gauge track
i first used the maglev track for them but the maglev track is not useful enough for the rail cars so I made a new one with the narrow gauge ;-)
but remember because they are available from 2010 on they will not need any overhead electricity or 3rd rail, just the "Rails Cars Track"

I just started the Gigantic Station Scenario made by Punar.
Only the use of the railcars is allowed.Starting date 2010.
I started in the middle with a 20 platformwide and 4 platforms long station.
Each platform can handle a railcartrain of atleast 8cars long.
Totallenght will be for 20 cars.
Great fun , :D Will release some screnies soon.

This reminds me of an idea I was thinking about for a new type of rail transport. I call it "minirail". Basically, it's meant for transporting small and medium items (UPS, FedEx packages come to mind). The cars are basically short, narrow gauge, and totally independent. I was thinking it would use magnetic propultion built into the rails to reduce the cost and complexity of the cars themselves. Also to reduce cost and complexity, it would probably still use standard rails (magnetic propultion, but not levitation).

The track would be enclosed to minimize accidents, and cars computer controlled. The lines would operate more like a telephone line than a railroad - with individual items going to their specific destinations without stops to be switched and adjusted.

I figure if standard gauge trains can be safely operated at 150 mph, a train with no people on board, half the width and half the height, on an enclosed track could be really sped up. It'd be pretty cool to have standard next day shipping coast to coast, maybe even later the same day shipping.

Lesseee.... coast to coast is about 3,000 miles. So if the minirail can go 300 mph, it's a 10 hour delivery.

Infastructure costs would be insane, but the capacity and speed would be sweet. :)

I dont usually look in on this mods board...but having seen Chevyriders screenshot of his gigantic station and those robot railcars I had to go find them. I was gobsmacked at their efficiency. No platform space taken up by the locomotive and looked...well like there was something missing.

Excellent

Nice one Loewe13. :D

Here you see an experimental station setup with the Railcars.
I used it in the Gigantic Station Scenario Made by Punar.
The transported volume was so high that i didn't need all the station platforms.
I was much fun.
More of this game with the railcars in this topic.

I saw that you made special signals for the railcars.
They now have direction lights on top the show wich side the train is going.
Very nice done. In holland we have the same light, but then placed under the coloured signals. We call them "Koeie kop"( cow head). :)

Re: Loewe13,
As you see in the graphics section to day, there are more releases now with the name "Railcar".
Perhaps it is a good idea to call your system "Robot railcar"or something like that. Will there be an official [Rel] instead of [WIP]?
I play with them everyday, thanks.
