New Graphics Engine: Scale

Post by jungle »

I was thinking about the current graphics set on TTD and thought one thing that could be improved on with a new graphics engine would be the relative sizes of the roads and tracks. At the moment, one line of train track or road is as wide as a skyscraper, which is a bit unrealistic really. Even houses are a bit small compared with the vehicles.

In my opinion (normal) roads and tracks should be one square wide as at the moment, but most buildings - except very small ones such as statues, and possibly individual small houses - should be 2x2 squares in size or larger. If that made houses too big there could be several houses on the same square.

At the extreme end, the football stadium in TTD for example is way smaller than it should be - surely it should be at least 6x4. At the moment the stands are towered over by the terraced houses next door!

On OTTD's current map size, expanding the size of buildings probably wouldn't be practical because it'd make towns too big, but when big maps are introduced, it shouldn't be too difficult, since even the existing graphics engine can already draw 2x2 buildings without problems. Many of the 3D models (most of which look excellent, by the way) created for the new graphics could be scaled up without too much difficulty, although some of the new 'pixel-by-pixel' buildings would obviously have to be redrawn.

Bringing in the new graphics system would be an ideal opportunity to fix the scale issue.

Jungle, my graphics are being created to a more realistic scale.

most large skyscrapers AFAIK will be 2x2 squares. one house will be 1x1 square. you will get medium-small sized office buildings that are 1x1 square large smallish sky scrapers.

the thing is small towns will still be small, buht large cities will become fairly huge.

airports will still be smaller than in real life, but larger than current.

and vehicles can have a more realistic size too.

Yeah it's good to make the scale a bit more correct, but please, keep the feelling of the original.

yes i am personally trying to balance between two fine lines. realism and TTD feel.

TTD has a more limited colour pallet than modern games, hence they are normally more vibrant, and saturated. this is one feel i will tyr to keep in OTTD. roads having a higher contrast, company colours being bright and colourfull. the grass being very green, the water being very blue.

things like this i think will help it be a smoother transition.

Sounds excellent... some of the new graphics on here are very impressive as well.

Looking forward to seeing them start to appear in the game.
