Problem with CD Security

Post by Mystic »

I've been getting an error message on my screen since this afternoon whenever I try and go back and play Locomotion after I have quit. Please Insert the Original Disc instead of a Backup. See http://www.securom.com/copy for more details.

I've been playing since Thursday night and haven't seen this happen until today. I thought that a simple reboot would solve the problem but apparently it hasn't. I am able to load up the game normally the first time after a reboot, but then when I quit and try to start up the game again I get that error. The only way around it is if I open up my Windows Explorer, and click directly in the CD folder the autorun file and press PLAY. I think I'm going to uninstall and reinstall and see if that fixes it. (BTW, is there a way to save the progress of the completed scenarios, I know in RCT it was difficult to save if you reinstall.)

System Specs:

P3-800MMX
384MB SDRAM
120Gig WD 8Mb HD
WinXP PRo

Here's the pic:

The saved games are in a seperate folder, you should be able to copy these, some games even keep the savegames after an uninstall
I haven't tried this yet
Well, back to work, lot's of it in the near future

Saving Game Progress

Post by heppers »

To hold onto your save game progress, IE a record of what you've completed you need to keep Scores.dat which is in the Locomotion\Data directory.

Your CD drive has problems with the copy protection. Try to clean the CD and drive. Or, if you really bought the game (I think you did, as games worth to buy should be bought), look for a No-CD-crack (or Backup-CD-crack) and try again. I know it's not that legal as it is an altered binary, but for testing and if you bought the game, this won't be a problem (I think).
The securom protection has some problems with some drives.
Thanks to the cheaters, Multiplayer in ottd sucks.

The problem with that (the No-CD crack) is that it might prevent multiplayer from working, depending upon wether or not Chris included a checksum of the exe to verify both games are running on the same version.

You're absolutely right, my wall of PC game boxes and spare room of boxes with PC boxes inside will prove my loyalty to game developers. :D And I feel even more satisfied with my purchase when developers like Chris Sawyer include a huge 144 page manual nicely binded. Doesn't have to be big and bulky but very tasteful, and nicely packaged. (I had feared that the small box models would eliminate manuals altogether.)

(I have my receipt too from EBGames in downtown Montreal.)

Anyways, I'll follow what was mentioned and reinstall, and save the scores.dat file to another directory and just incase, my saved games files, and reinstall, and hopefully this will do the trick.

My CD drive is about 8 months old, it's a 52x24x52x LG CD-R/CD-RW drive. (My previous one was a 48x and it lasted less than a year, and stopped working entirely.)

In my experience, the newer your drive, the more likely you are to have a problem with securom copy protection.

There was a similar issue with RCT2. Don't Atari learn? It took a few weeks for a securom update patch to become available for that game.

I'm having exactly the same problem... but the strange thing is, the very first time i run loco everything worked fine, but after that even reinstalling my entire system didn't help...

The only protection I've seen so far...

is the CD Serial number check when playing LAN games. Chris Sawyer seems to have been as bad as Microsoft in this respect. You can't buy a copy, install it on YOUR two PCs at home, and play with a brother or sister... I know the game is cheap, but its not cheap if you have to buy two.

I have to admit, not ashamedly, I went looking, and found a keygen, and reinstalled on my other machine with a different CD number. But i haven't seen your "backup" CD message.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I did reinstall, and my progress was saved (thanks for the tip), however, the same problem I had before is still happening. I play the game for a while, and quit, and start it up later on (without restarting) and I get this error.

Wait a sec, I'm going to check, maybe when I quit, the program didn't entirely quit, and maybe the CD security software app from the CD is still running, which makes the game think that it's already playing, so it asks for another CD, since it won't allow two instances of the game to play, even though I did quit.

I'll get back to you guys on that theory.

Well, back to Locomotion. (after a quick reboot.) ;)

I noticed from your screenshot that you have Alcohol 120% installed. The SecuRom protection might be conflicting with some of the emulations that it uses. Try turning it off and see if that helps.

well (ok, here I go again)

I had problems with Doom3 while having Alcohol120% or Deamon-tool srunning in the background (and emulating some DVD drives, yes illegal copy of doom3)

when I had 1 or both of them running, Doom3 said : *you are runnin' an illigal copy of Doom3 bla bla bla*

when shutted down the entire process of Alcohol and or deamon-tools, Doom3 booted fine (yes, a no-CD crack)

so try disabling/shutting down the processes of emulating drives thingies.

ps. I already deleted Doom3, too boring, lol it was a waste of those 6+gigs :S

Multiplayer works with a NoCD. I tried it. (Of course I bought the game as games worth playing are games worth buying)

I totally agree, but in these times most games are just not worth it to buy them, unfortunatly.

Luckily Locomotion is a game worth buying. (At least I think due to the fact that the last days I played the game 'till 4:00 ::?
. Couldn't say that of the great 20-million-dollar costing doom3)

I stopped playin'doom3 after I scared the s*** out of me a few times when it was late (somewhat 0000 midnight) and some monsters appeared behind my back.

when that happend it was like: my heart went up to 150BPM and I stopped playin'...

I am also using a virtual CD drive as well, which might be causing conflicts too. I've used Alcohol 120% a few times to make some backup CDs, but considering what it is capable of, perhaps the program security detects it and prevents access to the CD.

Oh, and about those all nighters. I have to agree that Locomotion and Transport Tycoon both have those things in common, If I'm really into a scenario, I'll work for hours to get it done. I completed the Oil Oasis scenario in one sitting, and was done about 2am! I was determined to get it done, and I was unsuccessful the first time, so this time it needed to be done right, and I did it!!! :D

Anyways. my Locomotion seems to be cooperating with me today; I tried reloading it a few times, and it worked. So I guess it's just how it's feeling that particular day.

Ah well...
