Rusty tracks
Briefly: if there is no traffic on a track than it could became rusty. That can sound a little redundant first time, but think it over: it could be useful if no train use that track, you can see it.

another suggestion, maybe a bit OT
what about wooden sleepers and concrete sleepers?
in earlier period of the game, up to 1970 the sleepers should be of wood, then since 1970 the sleepers should be of concrete
very often used rails with concrete sleepers should be grey "covered" in the center of oil, never used rails with concrete sleepers should be grey but with grass grown around
Code: Select all

=||=====||= <---
|| || \
=||=====||= <------- sleepers? (i found this on the vocabulary)

You don't need to change any of the code, just the graphics files. Have a look in the "Graphics" forum, the OTTD graphics are in the same format (or near enough) as the TTD ones.
Wolf01: It would be possible to do that (it has been suggested before and the same answer has been given), but you will have to wait until the dynamic landscape array is done. And you will need to make some new graphics,

making the 'sleepers' or as we call them here cross-ties change at a certain date is a bad idea, i wouldnt really like it that much. but maybe an option for building track with concrete ties, but i really dont see the point. here in the USA only the heaviest main lines are made with concrete ties. i would reflect that in my game. the nearby mainline in my town still has wooden cross-ties.
i liek the idea of the track changing appearance with traffic. this really shows us what tracks are being used on our networks.
