US Set available [Trains v0.87.4d released 27 April 2008]

Post by Oracle »

Here you can download the latest version of the various US Sets: trains, stations, roads and industrial stations. Please see the US Set web site for the latest downloads.

Original post:
Oracle wrote:Yes, the first public release (version 0.80) of the US Set is finally here!

On behalf of all the contributors, I am very pleased to announce that just over 5 months of very hard work has finally culminated in something worth playing, although I think you'll find it quite different from normal TTD gameplay .

The most important thing to do for anyone who wants to play the set is to read the readme. This is included in the ZIP file with the GRF itself.

What is the US Set?

In case you haven't been reading the thread, the US Set is a set of American trains from 1920 to some time in the future. American diesels are well represented, along with high-speed and high-power locos and some of the classics like the Big Boy.
There are many special features of TTDPatch used in the set and we (the contributors) believe that you will enjoy playing with it!
It requires at least TTDPatch 2.0.1 Alpha 29 so don't try to run it on an old alpha version or the release version 2.0.
As ever, more information can be found in the readme.

This set is licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL). A copy is enclosed with the ZIP file. Therefore all the usual distribution and modification rights apply but the authors would be grateful if you asked before using the graphics elsewhere.

Where can I and will I be able to get it from?

The set should always be available at the following places:
  • In this thread, and more specifically this post. The latest version will be uploaded here, along with a changelog, and will also be posted at the current end of the thread where appropriate.
  • On the US Set website (soon after this release): http://www.as-st.com/ttd/newusa/
What should I do if I find a bug/have an idea/etc.?

If you find a bug then you should either post in this thread to tell us or send me an email at usset [at] tt-forums [dot] net. Hopefully there won't be too many, though :P.
If you have an idea for development, please post it in the "US Set Development Thread" in this forum. However, we do not particularly want any more locomotives because we have so many at the moment.
If you have a general comment to make, please post it here.

Sorry for the double post, but the ETD isn't working correct i think.
In corners it looks like a very short traincar w/ open space between the ETD and the traincar.

What's wrong with the rolling stock? I think it looks rather realistic myself.

Hmmm, I think its the random colours of them , I know they are realistic, but they are not my cup of tea.

I think it was the weird shapes of the livestock vans which put me off, but I like a few of the rolling stock now that i have played around with it for a while.

I've been watching the development thread for quite a while now and was always very impressed by the art, and it looks great in action too :) Nice work all around guys.

One minor thing though, are there supposed to be single level to bi-level transition cars for the turbotrain, because I can't seem to get them.

Correct. That's because the ETD IS a very short traincar, and in the corners, you'll note that there's always open space between the cars that are going around the corner. It's unavoidable. A better way would have been for the ETD to not be a separate car, but to be automatically stuck on the last freightcar on the train as a graphic override, but that turned out to be impractical. Sorry.

You're not alone, uzurpator feels the same way. The readme includes instructions for turning on a flag to make it not randomize the cars.

The TurboTrain never pulled bi-level carriages. In real life the TurboTrain didn't have carriages as such at all, it was a permanently coupled trainset, all single level except the raised cabs. We experimented with making up bilevels in matching livery, including transition cars, but they didn't look so well and we axed them.

Please note that the release site

http://www.as-st.com/ttd/newusa

includes screenshots, photos of (almost) all the trains, and technical data on them (which is also in the readme.) I am keeping an eye out for additional screenshots and action photos that I may include in the archive, the requisites being: attractive scenery, good (i.e. orderly) rail network design, and somewhat realistic use of the trains. I'll look forward to your contributions.

I have to point out here that of the screenshots I've seen since the set release, nobody is using cabooses... Every freight train should end either with a caboose or an ETD.

Have fun playing!

Any chance of a version suited for player-colour use turning up soon? As nice as this set is looking so far, most of the colours just don't fit in with General Midland Blue, and I prefer that consistent look throughout my fleet. ;)

As you might say, the chances are x where x is in (0,0). In other words, almost certainly not, unless you want to draw it. We did have this discussion and some experiments early in the project, which weren't encouraging.

Most of the US steamers would look bizarre in anything other than black. The diesels and electrics would be OK in some company colors and weird in others. The results would be spotty to say the least, and hardly worth the effort of redrawing everything to suit. Also you'd lose the careful shading.

It might be possible to put company-color medallions and roadnames on the steamers, and restripe the others in company color, but I don't think it likely. And if the traincars were all in uniform company color too, then it would not be recognizable as American.

You know as well as I do that's an impossible interval :)

I'm sorry, can you turn around please? The words seem to be coming from the wrong end of you ;)
If I repainted the front of this Victorian-era terrace in blue, is it suddenly no longer recognisable as Victorian-era?

OK, that's just plain rude. You've got the wrong comparison.

What characterizes American freight trains IS that none of the freight cars match, they're all different sizes, shapes and colors. If they were all one uniform color, no matter what they looked like individually, collectively the train wouldn't look right. This has been the case for 140 years at least.

Freight cars are fine in a variety of colours. Even here, containers might bear the colours of their owners rather than the company running the train service, however in the game you run one company (at a time, anyway), and at one time, one company has one livery in-game. So, excluding the freight cars, because those might carry the colours of other operators, or the companies whose freight you are moving, you would expect all of a given company's locomotives and passenger stock to have a similar livery. So if, for instance, I am using Blue as my company colour, I would typically expect to see the later locomotives painted up in blue, the passenger cars in blue, brake vans in blue, while the freight vans stay in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes, along with the permanent red ETD.

Well, that's a slightly more reasonable request, but again, not terribly likely. You never know though. If the artists wanted to do it, I'd coordinate it; the result would be like MB's Arcticset, where there were two versions - company color, and original livery. I wouldn't place a very high priority on it though.

Do you want me to make this set available at http://www.ttdpatch.net/newgrf.html ? If you prefer I can make only a link to this thread there, too. Otherwise just say "yes" and let me know how to write the credit and what link to use for it.

This is looking very cool, nice work chaps. But I have noticed, when coal trains are loading, that the wagons in the 'full' state move up one pixel relative to the 'half full' state - this is only noticeable on the direction in the attatched screenshot though.

Thank you so much for the invitation! It seems like your website usually holds only "completed" work. Since this is the first public release, there are bound to be a few bugs. I'd prefr to put it on your website in a couple of weeks, after we've received and fixed bug reports. Certainly I'd love to have it there, but I think I'd like to KNOW that it's ready before then. If you'd like to include a link to this thread as an "in-progress" project, that'd be fine, but I don't know that it's yet ready to be right up there with the rest of the fully-tested projects.

Idea for the ETD: why not make a waggon overide when it comes available? I mean: E T W W W We

(E)ngine
(T)ender
(W)aggon
(We)waggen w/ back light(ETD)
So then you don't have to buy a seperate ETD and have the bug  .
