Most of the times, when i'm building huge railroad constructions, i'm already in the next age of trains. It's annoying to upgrade trains that fast (especialy when you're using the fast forward button). And I like the normal trainways more than the monorail and the last railroad (forgot the name ).
Anyways, I think it would be a good idea to have an option to stop new vehicles being developed and having all the time in the world to build the normal trains / busses / airships and boats.
i think that is better to increase the duration of the years (in minutes) because at high speed a year pass too much quickly and i reached the 2090 in 3 hours of game

Well that's a good idea... I think we should be able to choose from different speed of game (of enter a value).
When playing alone it is easy to have some control with pause and fast forward, but it still would be nice. With multiplayer it would really be necessary imo
if you could change the gamespeed you could open a server which is always online with a running game very very slowly (a month gametime per day realtime or so)... it would be fun playing multilpayer with loging in every day and checking how the company is working...
hmmm... but with current multiplayer-mode clients have to stay connected, too....
and for a game like this it would be better using a stand alone server without running a player on that machine...

Awesome idea.... If it was on a really big map, you could have tens of players playing... And of course the longer you play, the more profit you're going to make... I really like the idea of this - no idea if it'll ever work, though

nice idea, like a MMORPG
increasing the duration of the day time may become possible to implement the day/night cycle (switching 2 grf, one for the day and one for the night, twice a day) or the season cycle, changing the grf 4 times a year...
this wouldn't be hard to compile but is hard to repaint all the sprites for the new feature because if now an object needs only one sprite, for the day/night cycle would need 2 sprites and for the season cycle would need 4 sprites and a mix of the two cycles would need 8 sprites per object!!
If someone is willing to change all the graphics, this would actually be possible. I don't know how legal OpenTTD would be with such a modified GRF file though.

What about an industry tree? You could fund the research of new train types. This would happen either "actively", by sending the money to "megatrains, inc", which results in slightly cheaper trains for you, or by "passively" funding them by buying older models. Finally, they could develop on their own, but it takes considerably longer.
Also, you could effect the cost of trains by working with some industries, such as the Iron and Steel industries. It would motivate players beyond "Must... build... for money..." by making them think "Must build ...for better ...ways of ...making money later!"

and, new idea seeing newspaper (the newspaper window is more dark than the game), automatically and slowly decreasing the luminosity of the screen without change the GRF... if this would be possible remains the problem of the lights, when the luminosity is low, some lights would be turned on, like RV lights and offices lights (or if people wouldn't work at night, the lights of block of flats should be turned on)... like in sim city 4
could it be possible to provide New grpahics (night set) and overlay them over the old set without editing the old set at all?
such as the previous idea, but just slowly changing the alpha of the nighttime graphics (which are over the top of the others,) and keeping the old GRF's intact.
of course the other option being that old graphics are phased out slowly as new ones are created. perhaps the goal is to have a list of current TTD graphics that need an Open Alterenative (yeah they would look different)
so that some day we can hope to have a fully open game.
I think the best idea would be some kind of a shader that darkens/lightens the gameplay area. But for that we definitely need OpenGL or something extra, since I don't think that can be done with SDL.
We also need extra graphics, or just light-maps for the buildings whose light should be on/off.

I'm really not into SDL, so pay no attention to me
Saskia: now to implement it

No less legal than it is now, for sure. It is definitely a derived work, and would stay so.
