S-Bahn is a German kind of trains. They are not that fast and made for shorter distances. In my opinion, it is quite useless, because TTD is a manager for bigger distances. Besides, the s-bahn is only for passengers...

Is S-bahn a kind of trams, or a kind of lightrail, or what is it exactly?

The S-Bahn is a short-range train in the DB railway network that connects max. three cities. Especially used in big cities with many villages or other cities around it. It's something between a tram and a regio-train: you can use it with your tram ticket where a tram ride would take too long. The stations are everywhere in the city, mostly built on bridges.
In Cologne the engine is a BR 111 or 143 or 146 combined with regio or special S-Bahn cars (like in my sig) with even more entraces (three per car) or a BR 644 ("Talent") or 423 ("Regiosprinter").

Saskia explained me what the S-Bahn is (I don't know if I really get it) but:

If we want to start a S-Bahn project, what would be needed to draw/code. Are there only trains needed or are more 'thingies' needed?

Trams would be nice. They need tracks on roads in cities, but can reach the suburbs, too! Of course its useless for long distances because of capacity and speed. But its faster on hills in town and accelerates much better than normal trains.

Would be VERY nice to have it! :)

Trams would need coding. Anyone willing to code for trams?

Yes it would be nice !
what ever, I think trams are not a conpetitor of trains, but more of buses. and I didn't see yet a ot of "suburbs" in (O)TT(D)..
I would like to have tram to have better service in the town. And if that could make the town to increase faster it would be nice also.

Big town = city
Smaller towns around big town = suburbs :)

Of course with special kind of stations, more like bus stops. There should also be bus station/tram station combos available (Which trams and buses can enter at the same time). Trams would also be very small, they consist of a maximum of three wagons which is two or three times as long as a normal bus, but can carry a lot more people (150-250) because passengers can stand very close to each other when all seats are full.

Trams drive on tracks built into the roads. So the roads can be used by both, buses and trams. Trams always have priority before buses on crossings, but they can drive behind each other:

Bus - Tram - Bus - Lorry - Tram for example

So trams should be treated like road vehicles in town traffic, thats realistic, too. Of course, having this thing underground, would be very nice, too

I really like that idea

But wouldn't there also be a central lane in places for the tram?

In reality, there are both cases:

Trams with their own lane, but also trams which drive on normal roads flowing with the normal traffic.

Maybe we can get some space for an additional lane for the trams by making the sidewalks smaller.

I have to say the same as I saif about subways, there are not room in the memory allocated to each tile as it is now. Changing that needs some work, and it needs a new savegameformat. We will most likely not see it soon, but it is possible in the distant future

It's like "RER" at Paris, but RER don't use standard trains - but they can use standard tracks, and can run "fast" ( 140 km/h) when on standard tracks - :)
In France we have "TER" also than depends of the region. So distance is most far, but they are low cost trains and generaly "low" speed (above 140 hm/h instead of 160 km/h for Corail, common long distance trains)

This make myself thinking about a thing...

In France (and I think it's the same everywhere in the world) we uses dirrents types of steel for rails.

For long distance and not many circulation, we use "light steel", and for hight density lines, we use "heavy steel". Price is absolutely different.
And I don't speak about LGV (TGV rails) that are absolutely more expensive ;)

Should be nice to use it in OTTD by including a "life time" for tracks. Each time a train run on a track it lose one point of life, and then when is become low, risk of accidents is high, so we must change it.

Because when I see "property maintenance" costs, it is not realistic at all, tracks are many much more expensive to maintain than trains themselves.
