[RELEASE] Full Vanilla-like Mediterranean Region v1.0

Post by Phosphor »

Hi everyone.

I've lurked around the locomotion community for many years and have been an active contributor to the OpenLoco OpenGraphics project. As a side project to what I've been doing with OpenGraphics, I've also developed a full Mediterranean region for the game that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the game's three vanilla regions. This includes a full standard gauge set, narrow gauge set, building set, and custom industry chain appropriate for the broad "Mediterranean" theme. The following lists includes all the completed rolling stock for the set:

Standard Gauge Includes:

FS Class 552
FS Class 470 "Crematorium"
FS Class E.550
FS Class 625 "Signorina"
FS Class E.431
FS Class E.626
FS Class 691 (Streamlined)
FS Class E.428 (Streamlined)
FS ALn 772
FS ETR 200
FS Class E.636
FS Class E.424
FS ETR 300
FS ALn 668
JŽ Series 761/ML 2200 C'C'
FS Class E.646
FS Class E.444
SŽ Series 342 'Moped'/'Tsar'
OSE Class A.551
FS Class E.656
SŽ Series 363 'Brižita'
FS Class E.632 'Tigre'
OSE Class A.550 'Roumanes'
FS ALn 663
FS ETR 450 'Pendolino'
FS Class E.652
FS ETR 500 Mono-current
FS Class E.402A
FS ETR 460/470/485 'Pendolino'
OSE Class 220 "Marlboro"
FS Class E.464
FS Class E.403
FS ETR 600 "Pendolino"
FS Class E.414
FS ETR 1000/Frecciarossa 1000
Siemens Vectron
Trenitalia ETR 521 "Rock" / "Caravaggio"

5 generations of passenger carriages
3 generations of mail carriages
A bonus single-stack express well car

Narrow gauge includes:

FC Locomotive n. 10 "Mascali"
BHStB/JŽ Class IVa5
FCL Class 350
SNGR Class 4000
Nuria E1
FS RALn 60
FEVE Series 1000
Renfe Series 315
Renfe Class 435
FEVE Class 1650
SLM Beh 4/8
FGC Series 254
Stadler HGm 2/2
Stadler GTW
FEVE Series 1900
Renfe Series 433
Stadler GHem 2/2
FGC Series 257 / Stadler SALi

3 generations of passenger carriages
3 generations of mail carriages
New second generation narrow gauge freight cars

All of these vehicles have been fully custom modeled with the intent of matching the original game's artstyle as closely as possible. The ultimate goal of the set was for it to feel like some long lost expansion for the vanilla game that never released. Some liberties were taken with the trainset, tweaking stats and what-not, in the name of game balance and maintaining fairly consistent increases in performance as each new vehicle is introduced. 950mm gauge trains and the singular Bosnian gauge train were lumped in with the metre gauge options for simplicity. Additionally, vehicle names were shortened or tweaked in the spirit of feeling like it really is a "long-lost expansion" (Ex. The OSE Class 220 'Marlboro' was renamed to the Class A550 'Morley', to both maintain naming consistency with the previous 2 Greek diesels, and also because I don't think a train nicknamed after a brand of cigarettes would fly in a game that was often sold in places like Scholastic Book Fairs).

In addition to the main vehicle set, a full town building set, 2 region-unique industries (olive orchards and olive mills), multiple scenarios, and a full Iberian Gauge set are planned and partially developed, although the Iberian Gauge set may be separated into its own supplemental broad gauge mod (I've already completed the broad gauge track type). This may seem overly ambitious, but with the creation of the main two vehicle sets finished, the remaining work is only a fraction of what's already been done.

I don't have any set release date for this, however you can download a demo of the set on the OpenLoco discord server, in the mod's discussion thread. NOTE THAT THESE CUSTOM OBJECTS ARE FORMATTED TO ONLY BE COMPATIBLE WITH MODERN VERSIONS OF OPENLOCO AND CRASH THE VANILLA GAME.Here are some screenshots of the full set:

In the spirit of how the original game allows the player to create arbitrarily long EMUs, this is carried over to trains like the GTW, allowing for whatever unrealistic setup you want. Want 2 power cars on your GTW rack rail line? Go for it.

This has been a long and very fun project to work on. I hope you all enjoy the v1.0 release! Due to the file size, I've had to host it on google drive.

Development of the building set is going at a relatively brisk pace. Since creating the thread, I've already been able to model 18 buildings + 1 new station type for the region, but it's been a learning process throughout. I'll have to go back and do some sprite revisions once I've completely settled on render, shader, and sprite processing settings. In the meantime, have a few example screenshots from a test map, all taken in 1990. Note that I'm using the OpenGraphics versions of terrain and rough roads to future-proof the set's aesthetics.

An example larger town. There's a lot of overlap with the Swiss set's large city buildings, but thankfully I can justify that by Switzerland's proximity to the Mediterranean and by just looking at cities like Milan and Turin. Aside from a few new skyscrapers thrown in for fun, I can focus on the medium density buildings instead, since those are the buildings hallmark to that quintessential "Italian" or vaguely Mediterranean look.

Another medium example town, this time with a station being serviced by an E.444 express passenger train.
I don't expect to need to create more than 10-12 more objects for the building set, including the sprites needed for the two new industry types. Naturally, I can't make any promises since I'm making this on my own time, but probably expect the first 1.0 release of the mod here some time in the next two months or so. I still need to create new scenarios for the set that utilize all the new objects.

Granted, those aren't the specific vehicle objects for the region, but those are the current buildings for the set. Right now the buildings are almost feature complete, with only the two unique industries left to be made + a city station. Some revisions for the first 10 or so buildings I made are probably going to happen too, since I didn't settle into a specific rendering style for them until around the 12th or 13th one I made, but the video should give a vague idea of how cities will look late-game. The ones I need to revise are some of the earlier houses, 3 skyscrapers (based on Bosco Verticale, Pirelli Tower, and modern twisted skyscrapers), and the renaissance styled apartment buildings I made based on Florence.

The set is now finalized and all that's left is creating scenarios to go along with the download. Here's a video I recorded of what a typical 100-year game could look like by the early 90's. The only non-vanilla/non-OpenGraphics object present in the video is the custom Concrete Steel Bridge mod by Shu Saura, over on the OpenLoco discord server. The rest can be found in the region.

Looking at this set, this sounds like an inspiration for me to make a vanilla-style Japanese and Oceanian sets when the time comes in the future...

The 1.0 version is finished and now available at the top of the thread! I'd love to hear feedback and see screenshots from anyone that wants to share.

Found this out some days ago and having a blast with this! Haven't played CSL/OpenLoco that seriously for a long time, it feels like indeed I'm playing an expansion pack. Did the Northern Italy scenarios from Beginner to Medium, they feel good in the progression, all the trains feels nice in progression, feels like a mix of GB and Swiss region. Looking to try doing a 125+ years run from 1900 to 2025 with the latest train goes on 2019 on this set.

Some feedback:
I think you are only focusing on train part only? Nothing bad with that, but I noticed while trying to put an Olive cargo route with ship in the Italy map, none of the ship could carry Olive cargo at all since they are all vanilla variant.
