PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!

Re: PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!
I think the main issue is that the old menu was more wide than high - without measuring I'd guess that the width-to-height ratio was about 4:3
This matches nicely with most display aspect ratios on laptops and desktop computers.
The new menu has a width-to-height ratio of about 3:10 or even less.
This might be well-adapted to mobile phones and related devices but looks odd on others.
In particular with the very colorful current "title game" this leads to a very poor contrast and a visually highly unpleasant user experience.
Just add a bit more space around the menu panel in general and also make the individual menu items a bit wider (like +10% around each side, in particular left and right) should have a lot of positive effect and shouldn't really be "rocket science" to change.
Maybe create a couple of "mock-ups" here and then let users vote in a poll?!?

There is no button anymore to enter directly the newgrf settings. It can only be found under new game. I don't like that and would love to have the newgrf settings button back in the mail menu.
Re: PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!
What use are NewGRF settings on the main menu that are not related to starting a new game?
Re: PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!
Downloading and setting up sets of NewGRFs in one place? Basically it's more clicking now than before. Before you say "there is button to search for them in 'NewGRF option' window" then why we still have also button in main menu to do that? Button for downloading and configuring NewGRFs were next to each other. Now if you download a NewGRF from main menu you have to go to New game -> NewGRF options to set them up. Where is the logic here? The more I play v15 the more I dislike it...

You can download NewGRFs in Online Content via the NewGRF Settings window. It's still all in one place.

I so totally agree!
I mean, my respects to all the work put into it, but having it all chunked in one column is not visually appealing. I can deal with the new graphic style but please put it back in two columns.

You could say exactly the same thing about Settings.jfs wrote: 18 Jan 2026 13:21 What use are NewGRF settings on the main menu that are not related to starting a new game?

No. Some settings (for example Resolution and scale) are global and might be something you need to adjust before doing anything Elseif the interface or font are way to small. Therfore having it easily accessible is important. NewGRF settings on the Main menu will confuse New players since contrary to Many other games with mod settings on the Main menu (for example cities skylines 1 & 2) NewGRF settings are not global.
Re: PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!
Those global options probably shouldn't have been lumped in with the Advanced Settings in 15 then (prior to which they were separate menu items), which is what I was originally referring to, as I'd hoped would be obvious. To me, at least, it's pretty self-evident that all settings should be largely all in the same place if avoiding confusion is the goal, and NewGRF Settings are exactly that.

Re: PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!
Sorry. I thought you meant all Settings including ones in different Menus (i.e GRFs) and not the settings menu. I agree the Settings menu is a bit of a mess, but I think it was not really better before with some global settings in one place some in another menu entirely.
Re: PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!
The problem with settings is that they cannot be separated cleanly into two groups. Some settings are global, yet they can be changed at any time (e.g. resolution and UI scaling). Some settings affect only the current game, yet they must be configured before the game even starts (e.g. NewGRF list).

Splitting the settings into "settings" and "game rules" would be ideal to me.
Re: PLEASE bring back the main menu from pre-15.0!
To this day, I thought I would at least try to get used to the new menu. But after launching and playing a (saved) game a few times I can only say I agree with what you said, Robert. Apart from the looks that remind me of very cheap phone games, I would also prefer a menu that makes use of the increasing width of most people's computer screens.robert357 wrote: 07 Jan 2026 20:24 No it didn't. Old menu was, in fact, superior in almost every way. It was distinctive, compact and functional. Current menu looks like in bootleg cheap game, its jarring, its a step backwards. Not to mention we have vertical menu i horizontal space - someone designed it on the phone or what?
The order of the buttons is worse than in old menu that was already mentioned. New game, Heighmap, Scenario... Load game? Loading a save is second most used option, unless you have a lot of time to finish one play at one sitting or don't want play one map longer than once.
