Vehicle rename option to be permanent

Hi all,

Basically my suggestion is for the vehicle renname to be permanent, i.e. when you rename a vehicle ingame (In the vehicle purchase screen), it stays that name even if you start a new game.

It sounds like a good idea, but I think you're underestimating how complex this would actually be :)

First of all, OpenTTD would need to write a file that saves and stores all of your custom names. Then, when you start a new game, it would have to somehow map all of those existing names to the vehicles in the new game, which may not be the same as the previous game because of NewGRF updates etc. How would you do this? Per name or vehicle ID? What if there are multiple vehicles with the same name? There are a lot of difficult problems to solve here before this can work.

Even in the same savegame, it's easy to lose your custom names. Changing GRFs or running the resetengines command will reset all names to default. A good start would be a way to preserve custom names in the same savegame before even thinking about new saves.

Each GRF has an ID, within each there are unique names. The game already needs to track this and save to a save game. All that would need to be done is to keep a global config file with all the names. An hour of work at most.

I have no opinion either way, but at least don't speak on things you have no idea about.

I think the author of newgrf may have a pretty good idea of ​​how the game code looks and works.
For built-in vehicles it would be easy, sure. But for vehicles from newgrf whose IDs are changed by the graphics author with every update?

Why would I contribute something I don't care about? If I were to contribute to OTTD, I'd start with fixing things that are actually broken, like the smooth industry growth algorithm, truck stop load balancing, truck game balance, and such, instead of some worthless feature.
That, and I'm frying a bigger fish these days.
