Please add a monetary cost to buildings in the real game

Post by Nasty Flytrap »

Being able to build buildings instantly, or with the standard construction process, is great! I really love it!

However i wish there was an option so they'd have a monetary cost, so they wouldnt be free.

I don't quite understand what kind of construction you have in mind, because none of them work as you describe:
  • Company infrastructure is built instantly, but incurs a construction cost;
  • Town houses and industries are built in stages over some time and incur no cost (to the player), but they aren't built by the player directly;
  • The player can fund new buildings in a town or a new industry, but this also costs money;
  • In the scenario editor, anything can be placed instantly and at no cost, because this isn't the actual game yet.

They are talking about a newly introduced feature (I think it came with the bump to v15), where you CAN build buildings for towns from within the game rather than having to swing over to the scenario editor.

The main challenge here is probably that there hasn't been any cost associated with town buildings so far, so there's no basis for how much they should cost to build.

But there is a cost for demolishing them, maybe that can be used as a base for construction cost?

Manually placing buildings during a game is intended to be a sandbox feature, not a gameplay feature. Much like infinite money.

Gameplay-wise it does not make sense for a transport company to directly build houses and increase town population.

Why not? If it makes sense to fund new buildings across the whole town, it also makes sense to fund a particular building in a particular spot.

Not really equivalent. The local authority action "Fund new buildings" doesn't actually spam new buildings. It temporarily allows the town to refresh its buildings more frequently for a few months, and provides no guarantee that it will actually increase the number of houses and population. It can easily shrink as well.

Technically you are right; however, when the player clicks "Fund new buildings", his intent is to make the town grow, and that's what usually happens. If you wanted the town to shrink instead, there are more reliable ways to achieve that.

FWIW, real life transport companies have funded hotels, commercial buildings, and even whole towns next to their stations.
