How to create a Overtake railroad track

Post by vickyPune »

Hi,

I'm unable to create a second track which will allow smooth overtake.

In my setup I have create two track lines with oneway path signals, When slow train is ahead train does overtake, but this creates new bottleneck ,
As train in back switch over track even if track is empty

I want to track to be used only for overtake and as soon as main line is open train should switch back

The problem of ensuring a smooth overtake has been discussed many times ([1], [2]), but no solutions came about. The general consensus is that this is impossible.

However, there are some workarounds:
  1. By using waypoints and conditional orders, you can ensure that the slow train always takes the siding.
  2. The JGR's patch pack has programmable signals, which can turn green or red depending on the train's speed.
  3. I believe that a similar effect can be achieved by taking advantage of hard speed limits (curves and bridges) and tweaking the pathfinder penalties, though I haven't tried that.
By configuring a very strict timetable, you can ensure that the fast train passes through while the slow train is stationed at the siding. However, if the timing becomes a bit off, the slow train can depart without waiting for the fast train to pass through.

Yes, this is the typical behaviour of the train pathfinder. When there are two paths that are equally good, the train will choose the one that's less occupied.
