Mod Releases - CC-BY-NC-SA

Post by Zeak »

Hey all, its been a while. Hi to everyone I have known over the last 20 years, and hello to everyone I haven't met.

I understand Copyright is a bit if a touchy subject here and I know that my contribution to the community although small, has its place. So here is my official post for the License agreement for every mod I created and released.

To ensure the preservation of my works, beyond tt-forums, AMI trains, and for every new generation that gets the opportunity to play Locomotion and with the work being done on Open Locomotion, all works are released by Zeak are now avaliable under the CC BY-NC-SA license.

What does that mean?
This license enables re-users to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under identical terms. CC BY-NC-SA includes the following elements:

BY: credit must be given to the creator.
NC: Only noncommercial uses of the work are permitted.
SA: Adaptations must be shared under the same terms.

To put it simply. You can include my mods in mod packs as long as you follow the above rules. All of your mods in that mod pack must be under the same license if you include my work. You must give me credit for my work and finally, you must not sell any of my work.

Finally, I encourage everyone who has been part of this community for the last 20years to adapt a similar approach. I also 100% Support anyone who does not wish to take this approach.

I'll be in the OpenLoMo discord, and in the shadows here. Hoping this re-sparks my enjoyment in modding the game again and I hope to bring something new to everyone here in the future.

Thanks for everything over the years. You guys have been fantastic support, sorry I haven't been around much. "Life"

Hey Zeak,
Hey everyone
I can only agree with your statement. I also give my permission for non-commercial use as long as the above rules are followed.
For cost reasons, I will probably shut down my homepage in 2030. Load and share everything now. Have fun with it.

Greetings Walter

If you want your work to stay available indefinitely, consider publishing it through IPFS. This is a distributed p2p system (similar to Bittorrent), but it is also content-addressable (among other things, this makes it impossible to create a fake torrent). With IPFS, you can even publish whole (static) Web sites!

I'm glad you feel the same way. We are looking at setting up a server to distribute custom objects a player is missing when loading a new scenario. I'll pass along that you're okay with your mods being added.
After the server is up & running, you could down-size your website to just host your tutorials and guides. A free website may be able to do that.

I suppose it goes without saying, anything I created for locomotion is also available under the CC BY-NC-SA license. (not that I made anything worthwhile... )

@ Zeak, thank you for starting this discussion, and making your work available like this :D

And any Atari lawyers out there can rest assured that we will not be distributing any original game files, only fan-made files.

I need about 4500 MB of free storage space. If you can provide that, then I'll move beforehand.
I don't care who would be the administrator of this site. The only important thing is that there are no more costs. I could leave the tutorials on the site free of charge. Only the address will change slightly.

Why don't you try using IPFS just for file storage? It can be seamlessly integrated with your existing site.

This way, you can be your own storage service (of course the traffic costs will apply), and your fans can share the load by providing a mirror of your storage.
There are also commercial "pinning services" (basically storage services) that offer different pricing plans; some of them offer a free tier.

Importantly, you can switch between these storage options (self-hosted to commercial and back again) without ever having to reconfigure your site.

If you wish, I can help you with the technical matters. I am not affiliated with any IPFS businesses; I just happen to like this new technology, and I want to see it used more widely.
