using OpenTTD on middle school

Post by rado_434 »

Hello everyone.
I work as an IT analyst and teacher at a primary school. I'm looking for educational possibilities of OpenTTD on middle school. I only found this related topic: viewtopic.php?t=76281 . In the Czech Republic, there is a subject called "informatics", which aims to develop skills such as:
- defines the problem and determines what information he/she needs to solve it;
- model the situation using graphs or similar diagrams; compare his/her proposed model with other models for solving the same problem and choose the more appropriate one, justifying his/her choice
- evaluates whether the model contains all the data needed to solve the problem; finds the error in the model and corrects it.
- explain the purpose of the (information) systems they use, identifying their different elements and the relationships between them.

I think OpenTTD can be used for this. I like it because:
- it's based on the real world and has very understandable graphics
- can be used in multiplayer mode
- can teach English vocabulary

What do you think? Do you have any recommendations for other games?

Possible ideas (tasks) for kids:
1. Connect 3 cities, make a graph visualization, compare with other teams - which one is more effective and why? Which one can generate more money? What has influence? (number of passenger cars, power and speed of the engine, size of the station,...).
2. Visualize in a diagram how goods is produced and consumed (farm - factory; iron ore - steel mill - factory; factory - cities).
3. Prepare two railroads using semaphores. Compare them with others. Which one is better? How many trains can you run on your network?

Of course, tasks must be well prepared from didactic point of view, not to play a game but to be taught (using video game).

Maybe I can find a teacher here with whom we can do an e-Twinning project.

Best regards.
