This can be conveniently achieved with Idle AI and a cheat to play for another company.
It serves no purpose other than that with the subsidiary the player starts over from the beginning on a different part of the map. It's just another part of the fun, nothing more.
I doubt it would be beneficial to add something like that at the moment, especially since you can't even own part of another company anymore.
