The best part of a decade later, I am bringing this thread back from the dead. I am still playing with the same savegame (year 2817 with day length factor 30) and migrated it across multiple OpenTTD patchpack versions to JGRpp 0.41.2 - thank you to all the OpenTTD modders making this possible!

The Bronschhofen - Salenstein - Rumendingen area in year 2817 shows the addition of a highway, a dedicated freight corridor (from the bottom left tunnels to the bottom right pair of freight tunnels), and a total rebuild of the high speed / high capacity junction between Bronschhofen and Rumendingen. Bronschhofen is continuously expanding into the roughest territories, with further landscaping measures likely needed soon.

The backbone of regional passenger transportation is covered by trains from the SBB set nowadays, which have completely replaced the previously-used DACH set in this save game. Sadly, the RBDe560 'Hummingbird' EMU power cars with dual passenger/mail cargo proved not to be able to autorenew due to that feature, prompting their removal from the fleet and leaving a large number of accessible air-conditioned Domino coaches on the sidelines. Dozens of RBDe560 motor coaches are now sitting in railyards across the network before being moved to death row at BW Riehen and then slowly getting consumed next door by the heavy machinery at Riehen Rail Recycling, the only specialized railway scrap yard in this map.

SBB-CFF-FFS is headquartered at Stansstad on the southern coast of the vast Achtersee lake and has essentially monopolized the transportation market in this environment. Its closest rival from early days, Arctic Services (focused on rural mountainous areas) stopped growing long ago, and is majority-owned by SBB-CFF-FFS, just like the two niche providers FlixMobility and RegioJet whose only real estate are their headquarters and one train depot each. Their cherry-picked rail services are highly profitable, benefitting from the rail networks of SBB-CFF-FFS and Arctic Services that cover a combined grand total of more than 525.000 tiles. Domestic air transport was largely phased out, except for individual niche applications where it's absolutely needed.

Fun fact: a mistake in prematurely removing a NewGRF set from the game before removing all vehicles from it left me with 41 dead ships that cannot move anymore. This kind of user error is why the OpenTTD developers wisely made the option of changing the NewGRF settings of an existing savegame regularly inaccessible.

By now, the transportation network serves all towns of the map. The northeast is mainly connected through a narrow strip of land, on which we find the city of Cully. This city is reached by the quadtracked main line from the north, wherein the inner pair of tracks is dedicated to higher speed operation with at least 190 km/h. At Cully Gare de l'Aerounautique et Navale, this line splits off to follow the southwest and southeast coasts of the narrow strip of land leading to the landlocked mountain range dividing the north from the south.

Cully Gare de l'Aerounautique et Navale is an important hub for passenger and mail along the Northeast Main Line. North of Cully, the Ost-West-Kanal links the sea on the east to a domestic lake in the west. Intercity trunk routes are nowadays served mainly by Finnish IC2 consists, transporting 1230 passengers in comfort at 200 km/h on board of an 8 tile push/pull train with a single VR Sr2 locomotive.

p.s. This save game was started on a Late 2008 MacBook 13" with a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Today, it runs on a HP Z620 Workstation with an Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2 and 32 GB of RAM. Running in 4K resolution, and on the performance-heaviest zoom setting, OpenTTD utilizes about 12% of the CPU capacity and just under 6 GB of RAM with this save game.
