I am wondering if anyone has come across the same issue with gameplay after a certain time as their saved game has got bigger (30Mb), this is around 4 years worth of gameplay. Whether it is on normal or on fast forward it is at a snails pace. I have the largest map possible, some 3000 trains (nothing else as inflation/cost multiplyer doesn't make them viable - another issue, if anyone knows how to fix please also comment), multiple industries (FIRS) and I find it difficult to do anything now due to how slow the game is.
I am already aware of the following that OpenTTD runs on one core (I have 4), even when running on fast forward it is still only at 15% of the CPU and 5Gb of my 16Gb RAM.
Does anyone have the same issue or anyone aware of specific settings that can be adjusted to force faster gameplay?

Yeah, 3000 vehicles is about the point where the game can start to slow down even on modern cpu, especially with newgrfs and 4k map. Not really much you can do about it sadly. Though you can try posting a screenshot of the frame rate window (under ? button) or fps console command in case there is some other issue at play here.

This says it all I think

Re: Game Speed
Yes, you've probably capped out your processor.
I currently have over 5000 trains, on a 2048x2048 map, using about 490MB RAM, and my frame data is below
bare in mind though, I am running this on an i9-12900K with 64GB RAM, fast forward is still noticeably faster (frame data suggests 1x to nearly a flat 3x), it is still a lot slower than an empty map runs though at full. So I'm not sure how many more trains i can get before it starts to go below 1x speed lol

Re: Game Speed
I hate having train ticks. Dragging your train to the train vet is such a bother and I don't want my train to catch a nasty disease.

Re: Game Speed
Back when i first got TTO on my 386 computer with 25MHz, the game slowed noticeably with each train, and pretty much ground to a halt at the maximum of 60 trains. if you ignore the bigger maps and more complex algorithms (pathfinder, cargodist, etc.), just having factor 100 more trains can cap out modern CPUs
Re: Game Speed
Interestingly I have downloaded the latest nightly release after reading up on FPS. The performance has doubled, still not great by any stretch but it is an improvement.
