Decompiling Special .DAT Files

Post by Zakos »

Just curious, is there a tool capable of decompiling some of the files that Locotool doesn't accept? In the past I've gotten the "is not a dat file" message from the gantries, and now I'm getting it from the New Jersey Transit company file. Just wondering.

This affects some of Plasticman's files. I don't know why and how to open it anyway. But are only a few.

I wanted to copy and paste some of the sprites from the New Jersey Transport company so that the graphical inconsistency in-game would go away, but I think I'll just mess with my own code instead. I'm not much with sprites though.

You can use the CheckHex tool to fix change the header to allow the file to be opened, IIRC. Not sure if where to download it now, but I do have a copy if you can't find it.

Doesn't seem like a standard decompiler would work, given the sprite data mixed in with raw code.

Is CheckHex something I can find anywhere, or is it a forums tool?

I honestly don't remember where I got it originally. Wi-Sim, I think, though it may be somewhere on the forums. Owens Locomotion Depot does not appear to have it though.

How do I use it? It doesn't respond like Locotool, nor can I open it normally. Are there extra files which go with it?

It's been a while since I used it, but from what I can remember, it works like Locotool. However, I could only get it to work in a Windows XP VM.

Seems limited to files from Temple of Elemental Evil; I can't get it to work without a file from that game.

I haven't had any luck yet, but thanks for the input. I'm gonna start a separate topic or browse because there's another way to do what I'm trying to do.

checkhex is from here:
https://www.wisim-welt.de/filebase/inde ... -checkhex/
For me it is not working under Win10, Even with comp set to WinXP
The only thing that is not very successful in the wireless version : Bungee Jumping 8o
Just fold at the dotted line and cut it out with a pair of scissors. If you are under the age of 16 please ask one of your parents or an adult supervisor if she/he can help you.

I couldn't get it to work either so it's probably a compatibility issue. Either way, I found a workaround by printscreening to get the image and reconverting it to the lomoveh palette with Wally.
