As soon as it's in trunk, it's not a patch anymore. They were patches before they were included, now it's just part of the game.

A patch is a patch because it "patches" an existing whole. The existing whole in this case is the "trunk" or "master" branch. After the patch is merged the patch becomes a part of the existing whole.
Maybe what is confusing is this: a former patch may be merged in a way into trunk so that it's optional.. But then a former patch just became a configurable game feature.
