Hi there.

I just joined a couple of days ago and missed this intro thread.

Introducing myself: Well, I'm rather impressed to realize I've been playing this for almost 20 years! Back from the TT days, pre "deluxe". Despite having made the switch to open ttd at some point I have been away for a few years -- something like 6 or 7. And boy am I surprised to come back! I'm also realizing how much I didn't get "into" the open ttd world (no idea why I didn't at the time though) and am still a bit lost amongst so many awesome newGRFs people have created, not to mention all the other amazing features added to the trunk in the past few years. It's mind blowing! It's easy to see this is an amazing community.

One little dirty secret about me: I've never played a multiplayer game! I was always (and still am) a bit afraid of the "persistence" thing. Being able to play for an hour or two, create a company in this time and just have to abandon it because one needs to take a break? I'm still unsure. But I need to try it at some point I guess. It does seem perfect to play with friend(s) though. Just unfortunately I don't know any who plays it. I tried to get my girlfriend into it recently but not much success. She didn't like fiddling with trains because "signals are too complicated" (although we only had one line), and road only didn't exactly amuse her either. But I'd assume this story might repeat itself with other couples?

I'm at the moment trying to find ways for the game to be more challenging in every way I can. I don't like snowballing after the first successful train line and then money is never a problem again. On the other hand, I like competition and I didn't find a way for the AI to properly survive in very harsh difficulty settings yet. And I've tried quite a few. At this point I'm thinking it would be a godsend to have different difficulty options for AI and for the player. For example: High running costs for humans and low running costs for AI. And maintenance costs on for humans and off for AI. I think those two would already help a whole lot to make the game more interesting to play single player!

On a last note of introduction: Yes, I write too much.

tl;dr: Hi, and a big thank you for all those who contribute to this awesome game that just never gets old.

Hello everyone,

I'm a 32 year old guy from the Netherlands. I've played TTD on the old 486-25 of my father, and subsequently on the pentium 1, pentium 3, my own athlon2500 and now the dual core I replaced the athlon with. At first I played the original. For modern windows pc's I needed a patched version by Fish you probably recognize. Ever since I had to upgrade to windows 8 the patched version didn't work anymore, so I googled for a new version, and I found OpenTTD.

You guys actually created your own version of the game.

Whaaaaaaat? That is awesome in so many ways I can't begin to describe!

Downloaded it. Created a map. How big would I like it to be? How about maximum size? So, what do I have? Map. Scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll... It's freaking endless! I could have the full seven competitors in here and never actually meet any of them! And then the game tried to launch one. It failed. Apparently I had to download an AI. So I did. Curious to see how good it is. There were two major flaws to the old TTD: 1. It was too easy to create a profitable company. 2. The AI was not smart enough to be anything remotely close to a challenge. It'd be awesome if you guys managed to tackle those two.

And even if the AI is still weak, there is multiplayer! Not that I have the time for that, but oh my, am I going to make some, and organize a LAN party with a friend of mine to play this old baby again! Together! Never done that before. That's going to be epic!

Thanks a lot! :D

It's still pretty easy to make money, but there are some new features which can slow your roll. If you enable inflation, it will likely bankrupt you as its pretty broken. To compensate for this, there are now variables for both infrastructure maintenance and airport maintenance costs, you can tweak them to what you like. NewGRFs give you new vehicles, new industries/economies which can make how much money you have to sink into something go up. If thats not enough, there are NewGRFs that simply allow you to increase the base costs.

Lots of AIs out there now, some will play against you in a friendly manner, and some will most likely clobber you. AI's can't cheat anymore, either, so they do it fair and square.

Hey everyone,

I'm not new around here, but in a way this is a new beginning.

I am consolidating everything from multiple usernames to one, (I was sapphire united, here)

I started out as War_Party in the openttd universe and all I would do is go around and grief.

I spent a lot of years spamming videos on these forums and being a dick, but I'd like to put all of that past me if you are willing to give me a clean slate.

I think Dave will know what I am talking about.

Moving into the future I will be working on my cross-platform tabletop/online game called orbit and printing various models through my 3D print lab series.

Good to meet you all again.

Greetings, as the user name implies I'm greeter. I'm 28 years old, living in Canada, and I'm an apprentice electrician. With any luck I may get to work with trains for real some day. In the mean time though, it's fun to play OpenTTD. I never did play the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe, but rather found out about this game through a Wikipedia article about Linux gaming back in 2013. I was on an ancient computer back then and, well, OpenTTD was one of the few games in the list that actually ran on it, so I became hooked rather quickly. I have a newe computer now that can handle the much more demanding games, but I still play this one frequently. Hoping to get a little more involved in the OpenTTD community now. Cheers everyone.

Hello guys!
I have joined the forum few months ago, but overlooked this thread. Anyway, I'm stravagante and I have been playing this game on and off for quite some time, but never really got into it. Anyway, I'm learning a lot...just recently started my first proper game with MLs and SLs, and I'm still learning about junctions and signaling (priority's are really giving me a headache ). But one day, when I grow up, I hope to be good transport tycoon. :D
Oh, and yes, I am not patient person so I cheat. 8o

Evening all,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I just wanted to say hello to everyone and thanks the forums for the help I've gotten so far by lurking and all the great content that you create.

I played the original TTD when I was 14 in 2001 I think and then have flirted on and off with open ttd. I'm just a casual player really, but enjoy the game lots and keep coming back to it.
Keep up the good work!

Stu

Hi there, I am a new person. I decided to join as I love OpenTTD, so I guess that's why I'm here! Sorry if I sound a bit vague.

Hey,

As someone who loves chemistry, I came up with the username "chemie", which is Dutch for chemistry.

I have been playing openTTD for a couple of years on and off, never de-installed the game though

Cheers!

Hello, I'm Thomas (call me Tom if you want), I'm 11 years old (12 on the 20th) and I live, and am from Hull in England. I recently (last Wednesday) started secondary school. I like trains, cars and politics, and I joined because of Locomotion, but I hardly play that now. I instead play MSTS (because it's fun and I don't want to get stuck in the vicious cycle of capitalism that is Dovetail Games' Train 'Simulator'), The Powder Toy (because you can blow cities up with nuclear weapons, which is great fun), OpenTTD (but not that much in honesty, as you'll find out later. I'm working on a map of Hokkaido (fictional)) and, the game that I play the most, get your spears and pitchforks ready, Simutrans. I enjoy watching Top Gear, fiddling with photos in paint.net, making up pieces about why Tony Blair should go to prison, and imagining things up (mostly ridiculous things that wouldn't happen in the near future). I am rather pessimistic (that's just me all the time) and am in real life socially awkward, which means I struggle heavily on social matters. I can write on a computer though, mainly my political views (either socialist propaganda or the real thing, depending on where you come from) and jokes.
