Want to building a scenerio Newcastle Australia

Post by GarryG »

I've been trying to build the Newcastle scenario for some time now. Hope one day to get it finished.

In the mean time I have done 2 NewGRF projects.

One is Town Names of railway stations in New South Wales Australia.

The other is a industry set based on Australiana. I built it to go with the scenario I'm building .. again.

I used FIRS 1.4.3 and SPI 1.1 to design what I wanted.

Much thanks goes to those who made those programs: Andythenorth, FooBar, planetmaker, Terkhen, Yexo, and many others who designed the FIRS Industry sets. Also thanks to 3iff for guidance and trying to teach me to use NML (It not easy teaching a old dog new tricks). Check out his forum at http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=73225

Update: Been asked if show some of the difference between FIRS and what I done. Changed names to some industries: Stockyard to Abattoirs, Grain Mill to Flour Mill, Ranch to Cattle Station. Added: Grain Storage, Livestock Yards, Parcels Office, Goods Shed, Freight Depot.

Hi,

Good on you for making this scenario - I'd definitely like to check it out when it's done!

I've made a few scenarios with FIRS, a Tasmania one, an east cost of Australia one and a NSW one, sort of like from Kiama to Port Stephens, from memory. The first two are on this forum, probably about as finished as I can be bothered to make them. I have mixed feelings about FIRS, it's really interesting to play with but of course it's quite complex and it takes some time to build a really satisfying network. It really depends what you're going for.

I can't really provide too much guidance on GRFs either. On one hand as the scenario controller it's cool to choose what you think works best but on the other hand it's good for players to choose what they want. I would probably not add any of those additional GRFs. For me, the Australian/NSW trains are not complete enough yet (though there is some progress still) and I just turn on scenario_developer and choose my own GRFs anyway. YMMV.

All the best with the scenario!

Hi Nickz,

Thanks for your reply. I used to work on the railways from 1970 working in the Newcastle area for 12 years before heading to other locations. So got to know what was on the freight trains. I got the names and locations of every railway station and siding and what most of these places handled.

I think I have all I need now to start it properly. The industries wherever possible I am putting in or close to the towns that actually had that industry. I don't intend to put many industries in the middle of nowhere like it the actual game. Only raw material and farms will be out of town.

From the town Maitland is 3 lines, one heads to Cessnock and has lots coal mines also handled timber. Another line towards Moree and Tenterfield handles coal, sheep, stock, grain, cotton (fibre crops), vegetables (not sure what to use for this yet). And North of Maitland heading towards Brisbane, is timber, dairy, fruits, sugar, fish, and again vegetables. All the lines had some quarries. I like to have make it like it was from the 1930s onwards. Road transport took the farm supplies to the nearest railway siding and loaded on to trains. Trains would take it to the nearest industry, to bring it all way to Newcastle and Sydney either to industries or for exporting.

So hope work on that idea. Will update this as I progress.

Cheers

I started making the scenario from Newcastle Australia, trying to build to a scale of 25 squares per 1 km. Towns that are more the 30 squares distance I hope to space them only about 30 squares from previous town.

I leaving space at each suburb and town for stations and freight sidings.

I adding every town and suburb served by rail and did so far Newcastle to Maitland to the west and included Port Waratah, Kooragang Island and the Morpeth Branches, and south from Newcastle to Awaba including the Belmond and Toronto branch lines.

When I first started testing scenarios using FIRS 1.4.4 with 2cc set and the 2 Australian Sets, all working well. So when started building several days ago I thought I try the FIRS snakebite see how that went. All doing well until I tested the scenario last night. The passenger carriage in one of the Australian sets carried Alcohol and the mail car carried building supplies. So I have to start again and use FIRS 1.4.4 for now.

I intend to use the following files ..
Australian Standard Gauge v0.1.1, Generic Australian Set (GARS) r06, 2cc Trains in NML, 2cc Tram Set, World Airlines Set , redFISH 0.4, WSF Ferry Set v0.4, Early Road Vehicles v1.0, Original Vehicles cargo set, Long Vehicles v4.
OpenGRX + Landscape, NH Foundations, Town and Industry - Basic Industry - basic industries (still testing .. it adds a Factory (replaces FIRS Building Yards), Farm, Food Processing Plant, Fuel Depot, and Power Station), FIRS Industries Replacement Set 1.4.4, ISR Train Depot v.0.1, MiJ © Zeleznicni Portaly (rail tunnel), Dutch Catenary, Total Town Replacment Set 3.14, UK Road Set with signs v0.2, Dutch Road Furniture r175, Dutch Road Furniture - UK Signs add-on 1.0.0, Town and Industry - UK Houses, NLHS - Dutch Houses v.0.1.1, Dutch Station Set, Dutch Stations Addition Set c.0.8, Hungarian Stations 1/3, CS Station Set - Platforms & Stops c0.3, New Stations v.0.614.08.2014, Industrial Stations Renewel v5574, Container freight station and harbour, ISR-Style Dock V1.3, Modular Locomotive Sheds 0.2.6, Generic Buffers, Total Bridge Renewel Set Version 1.2, Urban Transit System Bridge v0.1 beta, UK Waypoints Set v1.1, Beach Objects v1.0, New Company colours (black), Empty GRF, City_Objects, DWE-NewObjects-VariousNewObjects Version 0.1, DWE-Stations-Industrial Terrain Tiles v0.7, Fake Bridge, Farm Objects, FRISS - Stations and Other Infrustracture 0.5.2, ISR/DWE-Style Objects v1.0, MariCo v.0.32, SNO - Supercheese's New Objects, Street Lights, TTD Landscape Objects v3.0, VAST (Objects) 0.3.0, VAST: Assortment of Station Tiles, VAST + Fences 0.3.0
Water Features r51

Not sure what tracks to use .. I like the NuTracks because of tracks that can be used in sidings and branch lines very slow tracks have warning signs for level crossings and rest have boom gates. But also like the Finescale Standard Gauge and 3rd rail set because of it has gates for level crossing which makes it realistic when games starts in the very early 1900s, but not like the fences much. Any suggestions?

Well, I started this scenario, but decided to start from Sydney and head North to Newcastle and beyond. Putting in all the suburbs served by rail between Sydney and Newcastle too.

Scenario play area is 4096 by 2048.

So far I reached Dora Creek. Hope in a day or two will reach Newcastle.

Trying to put in the foundation work where the rails go. All the major curves, hills, road and creek bridges, marking where the tunnels go, following the river from Hawkesbury to Gosford.

Putting in what industries I know of in or near the towns that had or have that industry.

Building it all to a scale of 25 squares per 1 km.

Let you know when I reach Newcastle.

Done a test on what I built so far to scenario. A few mistakes to fix.

The flyovers between Redfern and Central not easy. If any one has built this section and still have copy can I see what you did?

Those who know Sydney and Redfern may also pick some errors, so please let me know.

I been numbering the platforms in all towns I put in scenario.

I missed Parcel and mail docks 1 to 4 near platform 1.

Carriage sheds should have more roads, but not enough space.

At Redfern, I did not allow enough room for the road into MacDonaldtown Car Wash sheds.

ACDEP still needs finishing touches.

Anyone know of any non-platform tiles or building that would look ok for Sydney terminal building?

You might want to take a look at the US Station Set, or if you can find it, a version of Canadian Stations earlier than version 1.6

Thanks for the info. I checked the US Station Set. It could be suitable for some stations too. Trying to find the Canadian Set before 1.6 not going to be easy unless someone out there has a copy can leave a link here.

Japanese Station set has some single platforms too.

There is no link, you made a copy.

Where did you find this?

Are you sure you are permitted to distribute these files?
There is no distribution license in the readme, unfortunately.

Ok, that should be fine, thank you.

To be on the safe side, I'd advice that you always point people to that post when they need those newgrfs.
The readme doesn't explicitly give you permission to copy and re-distribute the files, so it's best to avoid doing that.

Didn't realise what I did was wrong.

When you think of it, would be nice whenever we display anything such as snap shots of games we play, scenarios we made etc. Be nice to give credit to those who provided the add-ons.

If it wasn't for those who spend hours making these add-ons we wouldn't have a great game to play in the first place.

The snapshots I took of the scenario I making of Sydney and Redfern, I should have listed the NewGRF files I used, so those who made those files can feel proud someone likes what they did. and I would like to start by listing all the files I been using for the scenario.

Hi all, I'm still building the scenario, slow process for me due to a disability I have, unable sit at computer for long periods.

I thinking to upload what I did so far for any one who like to see what been done and are welcome to add their own ideas to it.

If interested leave a reply here.

So far the scenario includes the following locations: Sydney to Newcastle, Toronto Branch, Belmont Branch, Port Waratah, Newcastle to Maitland, Maitland to Gloucester, Bankstown line, Rosehill and Carlingford line, Abattoirs line, City Circle, Erskineville to Sutherland, west as far as Granville, Enfield and Eveleigh yards, some of the Rozelle and Darling harbour lines.

I been putting roads in to mark where the railways lines are meant to go as can not, or at least I don't know how to, to show where the railway lines should go when building a scenario.

Industries as far as possible have been placed where they used to be in the 1930s. Some industries that was served by rail only show a name and not what the produced, so I ben putting what might have been there.

The information I been finding for places served by rail are on a CD called "Track and Signal Diagrams" and is available at Sydney Railway Shop and ARHS. The disc has images of almost all stations and sidings throughout NSW.

The NewGRF files I used for the scenario, am I allowed to bundle them in one zip file and put them on here for people to access? Where ever possible the files contains the licence that came with the file when I downloaded them.

The files needed I listed previously.

Re: Want to building a scenerio Newcastle Australia

Post by Toffo »

Just from your screenshots and descriptions this looks like it's gonna be amazing!

Just one thing - you are building roads to indicate where rail lines go. That is fine for someone who wants to build a historically realistic route but what about someone who wants to play with the towns and landscape but build their own rail routes - an alternate timeline, if you will :) Will that still be possible to do in your game?

Also, will the player need to bulldoze large areas of road before building their own rail lines?

Thanks heaps for your effort, I'm really looking forward to playing the scenario!

Hehe .. I was going to leave some roads to give idea where the rails go historically, so last night I tested it .. problem I found was that many towns not allow to bulldoze the roads and couldn't bribe some of them. So I will delete the roads. I put in where the road bridges are, so be able to get a idea where to build the line.

Many lines in the Sydney suburban area have 4 or 6 lines, but platforms are only available on 2 of those lines, the other lines reserved for express passenger and freight. So that you know where the platforms go I numbered where each platform goes and how many. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Platform 1 most stations throughout NSW is the trains travelling to Sydney, platform 2 is going away from Sydney. Some lines I marked Down Main, Up Main, Up refuge, goods etc. Down means trains travelling away from Sydney, and Up for trains travelling towards Sydney. Down side of line is the left drivers left side and Up side is drivers right side when travelling away from Sydney.

Discovered something else last night .. been wondering how I can put the rails in as I build the scenarios for those who like it to be actuate. Found away how to do this.

1. First start your scenario and add one or two towns where you want them and save the game.
2. Abandon scenario editor and select Play Scenario and load that game as if your going to play it.
3. Unfortunately need to cheat some .. hold down Ctrl + Alt + C to bring up cheat window and select $20 million.
4. Now build all the railway lines how you want them to be all over the map.
5. Save the game and close OpenTTD.
6. Go to explorer and in My Documents under OpenTTD you will find a folder called Save. In here you will find the game you just saved.
7. Copy the saved game to the scenario folder.
8. Open scenario folder and rename the save game by changing the extension from .sav to .scn
9. Start OpenTTD and load that scenario
10. Add the rest of your towns and industries.
11. Save it and abandon scenario editor, go to Play Scenario and enjoy your game with railway line in the correct place you want.
12. All you need to do now is build your depots, stations, waypoints and signals. (You might be able to put in the signals ad you build the game, but that would take away the fun, leave some enjoyment for the game).

If you want to see some track and signal diagrams in NSW this website might be of help .. http://signaldiagramsandphotos.com/

Any one from Victoria wanting to do there state I found this website with track diagrams .. http://www.victorianrailways.net/signal ... alist.html

Hope to have a sample of the scenario I been making available here in a few days time.

Attached is the scenario I been making. It is not complete, but your welcome to play with it and edit it.

I have not put in any tree. Will do that when scenario is complete as trees make it hard to see where I need to build.

The scenario is from Sydney to Newcastle and the suburban network.

Sydney to Newcastle, Sydney to Sutherland and Cronulla line, Bankstown Line, City Circle (I left the road tunnels so you can see where the rail tunnels should go, and see where spaces been left for signals and stations), Sydney to Granville, including the Pippita and Carlingford Lines. The goods lines from Flemington, Sydenham and Sefton Park to Chullora, Enfield and Delec. Goods line from Wardell Road Junction to where it passes under the main western lines near Summer Hill. Newcastle to Maitland and north coast line to Gloucester. Toronto and Belmont lines. I think that's all of them.

Where ever a rail tunnel should be I put a road tunnel there for the moment so easier to find and remove.

If there are any NewGRF files that you do not have and can not find let me know and I will add them here so you can download later.

Please pick it to pieces and give me any suggestions to improve it.

Update: I've been using Nightlies r 27295 .. just found out that this scenario will not work with OpenTTD 1.5.1, so possible will not work with other versions as well.

I done some tests by making another scenario with nightlies and it too will not load in OpenTTD 1.5.1.

Hi GarryG,

I just downloaded the scenario and tried to play it but it wouldn't load on OpenTTD 1.5.1. It failed with the error "Game Load Failed. Broken savegame - Referencing invalid Town". This may be NewGRF related, I am missing 23 NewGRF files after running "Find missing content online" and adding some Michael Blunck stuff :(

I know it will be a big undertaking but for those files that are not available on BaNaNaS it may be a good idea if you provide a link in this thread to where they can be downloaded. Like Alberth said, this would be better than providing the files themselves as some NewGRF authors do not want their files redistributed and we should respect their right as authors. I think most people wanting to play a scenario wouldn't go through the effort of finding 25+ NewGRFs just to play it but they might do so if the files are linked for them. Then again, if you're anything like me a scenario is made for my own benefit, not that of others, so if other people won't go through the effort of finding a few NewGRFs and therefore can't play the scenario I won't lose sleep over it :)

With that having been said, I'm gonna start the search now!
