All terrain earth slopes

Post by glenjimen »

I really like the earth slopes in locomotion, I use them all the time. But I don't like the way they look when placed on anything but grass. So, I started to play with the graphics, and made them sort of transparent. This allows you to see through the slope to the color of terrain under the slope. I think it looks ... better, it does not "stick-out" as much in snow, sand or rock. I had to give them some color, so I chose the sandy ballast color of the default track.

This is a work in progress. What do you all think? Is it worth the time?
(I've only done one angle so far.)

Well thank you Zimmlock. I got the inspiration while playing your Dragon Traps scenario. That map is a challenge for me to play because I am constantly trying to make the routes realistic with slopes that are few and far between.

My goal for these slopes is for you eyes to sort of "glaze over" the earth under the track. If you don't notice them, I've done my job.

I'm not finished yet, so you can't download them. But I'm glad you're interested!

Alright, sorry for the delay guys. A HO scale cab-forward can be quite distracting ;)

Here is the first run-through of the all-terrain earth slopes. I have added them to the INVISIBL.dat (invisible bridge) because that is how I like to use them, but you are free to do whatever you want.

Nothing is perfect; the slopes only look correct if you raise or lower the land such that it is sloped, not a cliff-face. This is a little annoying to do for every sloped section of track, and I'm not sure how to solve this. I could add some scenery to cover the cliff-face near the sloped track, but then my slopes would look weird when built "correctly" (with sloped land).

Any ideas?

The only thing that is not very successful in the wireless version : Bungee Jumping 8o
Just fold at the dotted line and cut it out with a pair of scissors. If you are under the age of 16 please ask one of your parents or an adult supervisor if she/he can help you.

Hello, apologies for replying on an old post, but I can't find any other relevant place. Are you aware if there have been any attempts to implement this kind of slope in openttd? I'm looking for a GRF which enables slopes with a shallower angle than the default openttd system.

I am aware that slope steepness can be altered in settings, what concerns me is that the graphics make the slope appear to have a gradient of 45 degrees, and it looks silly to me when trains climb a slope so steep.

There has been some discussion going on here viewtopic.php?f=30&t=75019

Not sure yet where it gets us though.

Beginning is about ToS and copyright issues. More specific discussion starts with my comment.

I agree with you, but this could not be done with a newgrf but needs altering the terrain part of the game engine.

Trains in OpenTTD and Locomotion have the same slope, In Locomotion you have a terrain with higher slopes (the double) and 2:1 tracks, so the slope is the same.

I would like to have 4:1 slopes in Locomotion (and more), but that needs a new game. :(

I would say that perhaps more correct notation would be that tracks in both games have the same slope. Trains, at least in OpenTTD are always horizontal. Which is actually a good difference, as it means that only additional thing needed are few different tracks sprites instead of hundreds of train sprites.
